He is rumored to want above the 14M Sherman got in new money and way above the 12.5M Jenkins got last year. Me thinks we can afford him. Give him 5/72.5M with 36M guaranteed and Jefferson 5/40M with 22M guaranteed and half your secondary is set.
The Bills have decided not to use the franchise tag or otherwise break the bank to extend their five-year relationship with former first-round cornerback Stephon Gilmore. The question now becomes whether someone else will fork over big money for Gilmore.
Multiple sources tell PFT that Gilmore hopes to exceed deals previously signed by Janoris Jenkins ($12.5 million per year at signing) and Richard Sherman ($14 million per year in new money; $11.48 million per year at signing). If it happens, that still won’t set the high-water mark established last year by Washington cornerback Josh Norman, who received $15 million per year at signing after Carolina rescinded the franchise tender.
Other cornerbacks who will be looking to get paid include A.J. Bouye, Dre Kirkpatrick, and Logan Ryan.
Whether any, some, or all of them cash in remains to be seen. As the salary cap keeps going up and up and up, the top of the market for most positions simply isn’t. The highest-paid quarterbacks should be north of $30 million by now, given the growth of the cap since 2013. Other positions should be growing, too, but they just aren’t.
While that leaves plenty of cash for the NFL’s middle class, it keeps the rubber band from stretching as much as it could, even as the overall salary-cap lap band keeps getting looser and looser.
Personally I think the Safety positions need more help than CB. I'm opposed to overpaying for a CB coming off a down year unless Pace and his pro scouts see something very unique he has to offer. Is this guy a shut down corner who'll come up with a half dozen key picks too?
We do have some talent at CB and this draft is strong at CB as well. I'd keep elevating the pass rush so we don't end up overspending for UFA CBs who may or may not be difference makers. It's our Safeties who can't ever seem to play the ball well or defend the middle of the field less so than CBs who can't defend the edge.
What's the deal with Fuller. Is he gonna play and if so where is he gonna play? Is Porter still a starter and what about the younger guys we've added the last two offseasons? If we're gonna hand anyone a deal that pays $14-$15 mil a year with well over $30 mil guaranteed then give it to AJ. We're having far more problems scoring points than we are preventing the other guys from scoring.
It used to be team went cheap at Safety and over paid CBs but I see that changing now. The key secondary members in many top defenses are actually their Safeties and Nickel CBs who defend the middle of the field which we have not done well at all since Lovie was fired and Urlacher let go. Focus on that and the pass rush and we'll be better off.
I think we need a CB in FA and the draft because we currently have nothing reliable back there. Porter's decent but is not a #1. Fuller is a huge question mark and outside of that we have a bunch of projects that haven't consistently shown anything positive. I don't know that Gilmore is the answer but Pace should be active in his pursuit of a young FA CB who can elevate this team AND he should be active in finding a top tier CB in the draft.
As far as safety, we are in about the same position. We have one decent starter in Amos but he needs to be challenged by better players. I think we need to invest in that position as welll and I'm getting more and more open to the idea of taking a Jamal Adams at #3 or an Obi Mef. In the 3rd. Our secondary currently sucks. We need to upgrade it.

I agree. We need to go with the "sign one, draft one" strategy at CB. And move Fuller to FS.

Fuller to FS is a wild projection. I'll let Fox and Fang - two former DB coaches - make that call. On the meantime I'd start adding real talent back there not a cluster of late RD draft projects.

Its a projection for sure but I don't think its necessarily a wild one. Fuller (when healthy) is a decent CB but nothing special in Fang's D which emphasizes man coverage. He's way better in zone playing while facing the ball as he would more often as a FS. We happen to need one as nobody in the Bears safety corps can seem to intercept a pass. Amos is 0 for 32 in games.
Regardless, even if Fuller isn't moved from CB, I wouldn't count on him after missing an entire season last year. Porter is a stopgap who's well past his prime. In short, we have nothing at CB beyond some late round and UDFA prospects who project mainly to the nickel corner position. Sign one and draft one since we have the cap and this draft looks deep at the position.

I wouldn't give Gilmore that kind of money. Keep the $ for AJ, maybe another weapon on O, then go after S Tony Jefferson and S DJ Swearinger. Draft a CB in the 2nd or 3rd round, this year's class is deep and loaded with talent.
I'm eager to see what Deiondre Hall can do in his second year.

He's the only plausible outside corner we have right now unless you assume Porter will discover the fountain of youth and/or Fuller stays healthy and learns to play man.
