I keep reminding myself that Pace found Jordan Howard in the 5th round, and Tarik Cohen was a 4th round pick. No, we won't get an elite RB in this draft. But I am confident Pace will get a rock-solid RB who will be a great fit in Nagy's offense. While it would be nice to have an elite RB, I don't think this offense has to have one. Just get us a guy who can be a great fit in the scheme... another "cog in the wheel" of the offense.
That said, I am very excited to see who we do get, and how the RBBC thing works this year.
One last thought about the RB position. One thing I like about the RBBC versus having 1 guy, is that when injuries happen, you don't lose one key component of your game for the season. You can survive the RB on IR thing. When your running offense is all on 1 guy, it is a bigger deal when that guy goes down for the season.
Ha! I said “could” —meaning if I had video of every game and a week to look at it. I don’t. Let’s look at this trade after we can compare Davis+5th next year to Howard.
You said you "could" as in it was possible for you to do, that there is in fact video that proves your claim. The video is out there and so is the tech that allows you to just look at offensive plays. I think we all know that there isn't video that proves your claim because the run blocking isn't as bad as you claim it to be. If it were every back on the roster would have averaged 3.5 yards per carry like Howard did. Somehow, however, Cohen was a full yard better per attempt, and Trubs was nearly 3 yards better per carry. How were they able to do it behind such awful run blocking?
1. Patterson not part of this trade, and will not be much of a factor in the running game. We are basically counting on Davis to replace Howard.
2. The issue is not what he can be traded for. It is whether he has more value as a Bear than what we are getting. His trade value would have been higher if not for the off-year in 2018. I roughly compare him to Carlos Hyde who had nearly 1,000 yards in the years where he had 200+ carries and a 4.0 average. He was traded for a 5th round pick after an off-year. He is better than that. Watch him and Howard both this coming season.
3. Already covered that.
1. Patterson is part of the group that will replace Howards rushing production. You saying he won't be a factor in the running game is simply false. He will be. Pace and Nagy alluded to that when they signed him. If you look at the way he was used in New England, it will be a similar role here. He had 230 yards rushing last season on 42 carries. Thats basically 1/4th of Howards production. Is 25% not significant? I'd say it is. So no...we are not just counting on Davis to replace Howard.
2. Would it have been higher? Maybe, maybe not. Carlos Hyde was cut by the Jags after they traded for him, is on his 4th team in the past calendar year, and is 3rd on the depth chart in KC. You sure thats who you want to compare Howard to? You sure he's better than the 5th the Browns got for him?
Ideally, yes. Just as important, maybe even more so, is that he's gotta have 2nd gear speed and he's gotta be a capable receiving threat. Both of those characteristics are things that Howard clearly lacked.
Sure, but we'd be pretty lucky to get a "do everything" back in the 5th round.
Why do you keep assuming it's only the 5th round that a back will be chosen? You know we have picks in other rounds right?

Howard's YPC was almost a full yard less than Cohen. That is the bottom-line for me.

Some of that is also when they were rushed; but the other aspect is that teams never knew if Cohen was a rusher or a reciever. Howard was a giant tell to the def that the Bears were going to run, and that hurt the OL and Howard and the rest of the O.

And my guess is that combo may only be available in the 3rd round. IMO guys from the better known schools in the Power 5 conferences with size, speed, agility along with good instincts and vision with route running/pass catching skills don't make it past the 3rd round (maybe into the early 4th).
So anyone we are looking at pick #126 in the 4th (or later in the draft) is likely to have something "wrong" with them as a RB ... speed, size, injury history, personal/character/discipline issues, etc.
We should be drafting a DB in third round, if a good one is still on the board.

I agree, David. If there's a CB there at 87 that Pace really likes, I'd take him without hesitation. RB can wait until the 4th round.

Are you a lawyer? You sound like it. The word "could" means "would be able" if I have all the video and time required. I don't. They ran Cohen wide most of the time on sweeps where he could use his speed and agility to make up for poor blocking. If they ran him mostly off-tackle up the middle on first down and short yardage (on third down) -- as they did Howard -- his average would have been same as Howard or worse. Trubs running average is aided by the fact that he had the defense spread out with gaps to run into rather than a designed running play with the defense set up in position. You know that.
