With the exception of Jimmy Mac , we're just always too chicken to try ( in the 1st rd ) .
+1 I'd rather we had at least tried to get serious about a QB in the draft. Even if we whiffed, that would be better than not even trying seriously to get a guy. I really don't understand the Bears/QB strategy. They are just inept. I do hope Pace takes a swing at drafting a guy. My gut feeling is that he has the gears to get this done right. At least I'm hoping.
You don't win the lottery w/out putting your money in.

Nah . They'll draft another Moses Moreno or Craig Krenzel in the 5th rd and say " we're trying " .... and " but at least we have a good defense " .
12 years ago we drafted Cedric Benson instead of Aarron Rodgers.
+1 And I could understand not recognizing some of the better QBs in the drafts over the years. But we whiffed on a number of guys over the past 30 years or so. Heck, we didn't have to draft a great QB... but a "good" quarterback would have been nice. A good QB can help a team 10 or more years. The Bears just need to get 'er done. Is is hard? Sure. But that's the GMs job. Bring in enough talent to win - including QB talent. I really don't want to hear the whining about how "hard" it is to draft. If you can't draft then you are no good to the team. And I don't want to hear about how "other" failed NFL teams have had a hard time getting a QB. I don't care about what "other" failed teams do. If we are gonna win we need a QB.

And raise ticket prices again and laugh at us stupid fans. The McCaskeys will laugh all the way to the bank. They have quite a gig here in Chicago.
Walter, you just woulda coulda 2 straight years of drafts.
I just followed suit adding 1 extra year. Mainly b/c when I saw Flacco still on the board, and the player everyone wanted taken I thought they'd take the qb(since we didn't have one on the roster).
I then naturally pointed out that in the following drafts they could have answered the OL issue and other issues facing that team at the time.
You cannot woulda shoulda, and then blame someone else for doing it also.
Had we not traded for Cutler it's extremely likely that JA would have tried to draft one again using one of those picks. There is no woulda/coulda in that. That list also illustrates how hard it is to find a franchise QB or even a half decent starter in any draft. Cutler was a young improving player with actual NFL game footage and NFL stats. Not some college kid coming out of an option offense that may or may not be able to make the transition to a pro style offense and the various pressures of the NFL. The chances of getting a comparable QB even if we had used both those picks on a QB are tiny regardless of what draft it is. Other teams get to pick as well making this even more of a crap shoot. Cutler was as about as safe a trade as you could have asked for and those draft lists I posted show that. It was the right call at the time. And unless there is a Luck or a Manning in the draft where the Bears could pick them the trade is the right decision anytime.
Cutler not meeting certain people's expectation isn't his fault, it's the fault of those having unrealistic expectations. Most QBs flame out and flame out bad inside a couple of years. We got a lot of good work out of Cutler. Would I have liked for him to play better and put it all together? You bet. It's frustrating as hell watching him sometimes. But we still got more bang for the buck than the numerous other teams who drafted QBs and effectively got nothing for it.
Payton, it is exactly a woulda coulda. We have NO idea what he does or how he does it. Maybe he continues to ride w/Orton for another year or 2, maybe he goes after another FA qb, remember the team liked and backed Orton.
Again, I'm just taking it a step further and instead of woulda coulda, I addad Shoulda, b/c I remember being in the chat talking about how after Clady they need to draft Flacco. And NO ONE was talking about drafting Williams, and when they did draft him it was all talk about why the hell are you drafting an injured player.
They make the right move then, they don't have the mistakes that follow, that have persisted to this day.
Those unrealistic expectations were put out by the Bears and the sports talking heads and scouts that we are now relying on to tell us that no one in this draft is good enough to draft. Don't blame peoples expectations on them unless they were told not to have them. Him not being good enough is b/c HE wasn't willing to work on HIS game and follow the game plan. That is EXACTLY on him.
The QB issue goes back 30 years or so. There were plenty of opportunities to draft a solid QB but we failed to do so. In desperation we tried to "buy" a QB from Denver. In hindsight I wish we had never done that.
This wasn't just a 2009-thing. We've had 30 years to draft a good QB. So far it eludes us.
I think that Harbuagh was the last decent QB the Bears drafted..

Rex was decent but inj's scared and derailed him, Orton was decent but limited. Harbaugh was a legit average to above average qb though.

I don't even think trading for Cutler was bad. I think what happened after that was killing us. No Coach that really has faith in him, way too many OCs that couldn't find a way, still that same ownership that isn't caring about winning and the only Support for years was Forte.
