I agree with this. The thing that hurt us the most was the bad drafting.
2016 Leonard Floyd: Injury concerns 2015 Kevin White: Bust 2014 Kyle Fuller: Bust 2013 Kyle Long: Pro Bowler 2012 Shea McClellin: Bust 2011 Gabe Carimi: Bust 2008 Chris Williams: Bust 2007 Greg Olsen: Pro Bowler and 2nd team All Pro
You don't get far in the NFL when you draft busts.
2016 okay first off Floyd a couple of injuries doesn't make a injury concern ( So a player having to miss time while also having 2 concussions in close to back to back weeks is not consider to be an injury concern player? )
2015 White isn't even close to being a bust he is a injury concern ( Really? 2 years with only 4 games played. What do we know about White? That he has poor hands? That he doesn't know how to run a route? At this moment he is a bust. We're going on year 3 now and he has shown nothing to that #7 pick we gave up for him. Does he even still process that speed we drafted him for after having to have surgery on the same leg twice? )
2014 Fuller maybe
201 Long true
2012 Shea is a bust then why does he have a Super Bowl ring. oh yea because he plays for a team that knows how to play player ( Because he plays on the Patriots. With the greatest HC to ever play the game. Vic Fangio got what he could out of him. Which was more than we were use to. BB found the best role for him in their system. )
2011 Carimi a true bust
2008 Williams a bust
2007 Olsen one biggest mistake
The only player that is even consider to be a success since 2007 is Long. Our first round picks really do need to be worked on.
I think all of us Bear fans can agree that since our Super Bowl season we haven't had many good drafts.
Cutler was actually a very good trade. Look at the list of QBs the Bears could have drafted for either of those two draft picks.
2009 Matthew Stafford (#1 pick not available) Mark Sanchez Josh Freeman Pat White Stephen McGee Rhett Bomar Nate Davis Tom Brandstater Mike Teel Keith Null Curtis Painter
2010 Sam Bradford (#1 pick not available) Tim Tebow Jimmy Clausen Colt McCoy Mike Kafka John Skelton Jonathan Crompton Rusty Smith Dan LeFevour Tony Pike Levi Brown Sean Canfield Zac Robinson
We actually got the best QB available for both of those draft classes.
Year before Joe Flacco, and there was no good reason to not draft him. Next years draft then you can get your LT, Michael Oher, or LB Cushing/Matthews/Ayers or DE, Orakpo. Then the draft after that you got a shot at Jason Pierre Paul DE, Earl Thomas FS, J Gresham TE.
The miss was taking that waste of an OT instead of the QB(which the team didn't have at the time), forcing you to trade for Cutler, WAY TO MUCH btw, and missing out on building your OL/DE/LB/DB crew.

What injury concerns did Floyd have coming into the draft? Are they same mystery one's White had coming into the draft?
Yeppers. Big Ole inj concerns while in college, could barely get on the field, same w/White, dude spent his entire college career on IR.

You can woulda/shoulda all day with hindsight. It's easy to go back and cherry pick the players that had good careers. And shitty drafting beforehand doesn't invalidate the trade. You have to work with what you have and not what you wish you had.
The fact was at that time Cutler was the best talent available to the Bears given the evidence in hand. I know you have some weird man-crush on Flacco but if you think Flacco would have had any more measurable success in the Bears' organization than Cutler you are crazy. The Ravens are a much better run organization and consistently field better all around teams year after year. Flacco coming to Chicago would have been subject to the same garbage line, lack of offensive talent, and revolving OCs as Cutler.
Walter, you just woulda coulda 2 straight years of drafts.
I just followed suit adding 1 extra year. Mainly b/c when I saw Flacco still on the board, and the player everyone wanted taken I thought they'd take the qb(since we didn't have one on the roster).
I then naturally pointed out that in the following drafts they could have answered the OL issue and other issues facing that team at the time.
You cannot woulda shoulda, and then blame someone else for doing it also.
The QB issue goes back 30 years or so. There were plenty of opportunities to draft a solid QB but we failed to do so. In desperation we tried to "buy" a QB from Denver. In hindsight I wish we had never done that.
This wasn't just a 2009-thing. We've had 30 years to draft a good QB. So far it eludes us.

Well, in a week or so things will start to take a little shape.
A week from today the FT will be active. And by Mar 1, it has to be set. So we will know what our strategy is going to be with Jeffrey. To some extent, it will dictate available funds for a QB trade vs draft vs big FA splash on other players, but will not be the determining force. It will also tell us which other players around the league won't be available -- very rare to pick up another teams franchised player.
Still the very early parts, but some things will come into a little more focus.

With the exception of Jimmy Mac , we're just always too chicken to try ( in the 1st rd ) .

+1 I'd rather we had at least tried to get serious about a QB in the draft. Even if we whiffed, that would be better than not even trying seriously to get a guy. I really don't understand the Bears/QB strategy. They are just inept. I do hope Pace takes a swing at drafting a guy. My gut feeling is that he has the gears to get this done right. At least I'm hoping.
