Figured I'd make a thread just for Jeffery since it's most likely going to be talked about even more this off season. There have many opinions on whether the Bears will keep him or not and a lot of fan disagreement on whether they should or not. I'm seeing more and more reports that Jeffery will not be on the Bears next season.
Hard to say, and I can make a valid argument for both sides. One thing that is a fact, however is that he is by a large margin the best WR on the team. Pace has his hands full. We only have a few players with high end talent and we are trying to get more. If we lose him, it will be yet another hard to get building block that we will need.
I think the beginning of the FT eligibility is right around the corner -- Feb 15 I believe which is only about a week away. I would be shocked though if we placed the tag on him the first day of eligibility -- if at all.

Not only is he the best receiver on the team by a large margin, but he's the best receiver available in free agency by a large margin.
I really don't see many advantages to letting him go honestly. The only scenario I see it being alright with is if Jeffery flat out says he doesn't want to play in Chicago anymore. Other than that the Bears have plenty of cap space to pay him and sign other FAs.
If they let him go I find it pretty telling where this team thinks it's at. In their 3rd year of a new staff they are still in rebuilding mode and that's not good.

The biggest argument I see for letting him walk is that the amount we will need to pay him in a competitive environment is much higher than his availability dictates. I think he would play for us. The question is whether we want him to based on what we would need to pay. We can offer him something commensurate with past availability, but some team will make him an offer without any offsets like that. We are going to have to pay him like a top WR that will play all year to keep him. Whether management decides that is a good or bad idea, I don't know. I know that if we let him go, there will be a big hole to fill. A Kardashian size hole.

Shit.... if Butkus is going to agree with me, I'm going to have to change my mind
The problem with letting our best players go, is that you not only lose the talent, but right now we already have too many holes to fill on the roster. It's like we desperately need to upgrade the talent on the team, and then we backtrack by letting good people go. One step forward and two steps back, kind of thing.

I remember that poll on this board a few months ago. Who's the best WR? Meredith is the most reliable, but AJ is by far the best receiver. It's not even close. When 100% healthy he can make catches nobody else on this team can. We really need to keep this weapon, no matter who our QB is in 2017.
