Hard to say, and I can make a valid argument for both sides. One thing that is a fact, however is that he is by a large margin the best WR on the team. Pace has his hands full. We only have a few players with high end talent and we are trying to get more. If we lose him, it will be yet another hard to get building block that we will need.
Not only is he the best receiver on the team by a large margin, but he's the best receiver available in free agency by a large margin.
I agree and disagree. Yes Jeffery is the best WR on the team but that's only because we haven't seen enough of White (which I believe was drafted to replace Marshall as the Bears #1) to say he is or isn't. Should the Bears resign Jeffery yes should they over pay to keep heck no. Over the past 2 years Jeffery hasn't shown he is worth over paying, for different reasons, and not all of them can be blamed of Marshall, but some can.
When Jeffery was drafted everyone said he would be a great #2 WR since Marshall was clearly the Bears #1 WR. Since Marshall departure I can't see where Jeffery has stepped up to fill Marshall's departure as a true #1 WR. And once again it's not all Jeffery's fault and he has shown signs that he could be a top WR. 2016 was a show us year for Jeffery, and it clearly wasn't.
None of us know what Jeffery's is asking for, if it's reasonable then by all means sign him, but if he is still asking for the moon, by all means show him the door and move on with the 2017 FA and or draft.

So you don't want to spend too much on Jeffery because he hasn't shown he's worth over paying for, but you want to trust that White can replace him despite White basically not playing for 2 years?
Again, the problem becomes you have to replace his talent. That replacement isn't on this roster, so it has to be procured some way. There isn't anyone in free agency as talented as he is. There MAY be in the draft, but we have a lot of needs, and unless you're drafting Mike Williams at 3 there is no replacement in the draft IMO. So that leaves us where?

I think you miss understood me I don't want to trust White with anything I want Jeffery and the Bears to come to an agreement that both can be happy with, and true me I have no idea what that amount should be. I sure the heck don't want to draft a WR or QB at number #3 the Bears and Jeffery needs to get this deal done. But if and that's a big if, the Bears make a sound offer and Jeffery rejects it and is looking for a ton more money then my all means let him see what he is worth and free agency. Just make sure he is a restricted free agent (RFA)
In order to keep Jeffery the Bears will have to pay him a good amount of money. He will most likely have to be within the top 5 to 8 top paid WRs. That's just the way it's going to have to be going by the WR market right now and it will be just fine. The Bears have enough money to pay him and still sign plenty of other players.
Here is a list of the top 10 paid WRs right now, in order, and how they've done as long as Jeffery has been in the league which is 2012. Each player has been in the league as long or longer than Jeffery other than Keenan Allen. Allen has not only been hurt the last two seasons but came into the league one year after Jeffery.

UGH... I hate how this site changes the format of what I type out. I tried to make it easier to read.

With the cap going up, I still think what I thought prior to this season, Jeffery is going to sign for 14.5+ a season. Don't know where that falls in the rankings, but he isn't going to sign for less than he made on the tag.
Now, it would be funny if Palmer/Fitzgerald retire and Cutler/Jeffery end up as Cardinals.
Looking at that list I think everyone would agree that they are all pretty great WRs other than maybe Baldwin and Jackson. What you notice looking at a lot of their stats is that when they are lower they were either hurt or had a terrible QB. No one will deny Fitzgerald's talents but there were years that he didn't do well but it was generally due to terrible QB play. Others get the ball a ton and get lots of yards but rarely score like Julio Jones.
I think everyone here would love to have any of those WRs on the Bears but they are all pretty similar to Jeffery. They've had bad years due to an injury, or they had a bad QB, or they don't get thrown to enough, or they don't get TDs but they are all very good at what they do and in order to get them you have to pay them. If not then you just have to hope you get lucky that a couple scrubs on the team step up or you use another draft pick on one. Their success is still going to rely heavily on the QB though.

He's not an RFA...he will be free to sign anywhere with no compensation coming back unless we franchise him again to the tune of 17 million.
