In principle, I am not against a first for Jimmy G because if you throw him in the mix with all the other QBs and evaluate equally, you can make the argument he is right up there with any of the potential draft picks. The fact he has NFL experience is an added bonus. However because almost any qb seems to do well in the Belichick system I do discount that experience somewhat. The only heartburn I have with a first round pick is that he is going to be highly paid in a year and I'd rather have a rookie contract. Some of the guys in the draft seem just as good. I can honestly say I see Fox's hand here. He gets a guy he can play right away instead of developing. That is really the only advantage I see. That is more an advantage for Fox than the team imo.
I know what you mean by rookie contracts but actually Jimmy's contract is kind of good thing. You get a cheap year to evaluate what you have and if isn't good you can just let him walk. I can guarantee Houston wishes they would of had that option.
Yes, if he performs well the Bears will have to give him a new contract but that's usually a problem you want to have. It means we may have found a good QB for awhile.

But what you have to give up to get him is included into that price...i wouldn't be willing to give up draft high end draft pick(s) just for a cheap one year contract of evaluation...

No way you trade for a QB that cost a ton of picks to not give him a long term contract...
Exactly! So why would the Bears want a Qb who NE does not want to invest in? Putting JG on the trade block is saying that their 3rd string 3rd round Qb with one year experience is at worse, equal to, their 2nd string 2nd round pick with 3 years of experience.
But all of this talk ties into how long Brady plans on playing...if he plans to go 4 more years then you have time and can afford to trade talent away. If you have 1-2 years of Brady you better start looking now or next year.
Again...you're talking about them "investing" 40 plus million dollars into the QB position in one season. Thats simply not feasible in a salary cap league. Brady has a cap number of 22 mill after next season. He'll get to determine when he's stepping away. The Patriots very well may want to keep Jimmy...but the economics of it just don't make any sense.
They have about $65 million in cap space now and over $90 million in 2018. Obviously that has to handle people they need or resign. But they don't seem to be in a bind for cap space.

That's exactly right. You have the opportunity cost of the #3 pick and what they would have cost you. Now if he is a true franchise QB, no one is going to complain about the #3 or the money to be paid in a year, but if that is not true, then we are in bad shape. If Fox is the one wanting a "ready right now" QB, I hope Pace is on the same page and not being led to that decision by Fox because that is going to be Pace's career also.

That number only applies if you FT him. They are not going to FT him and he is not signing a Brady like contract when he hits free agency after next year...IMO
I get what you're saying, but if he is of real and strong value as a player they would not let him go with Brady's age in mind. They can back-load the contract to ease the money spent in the first couple of years to make things more team friendly. And if you are JG and want to win games playing for one of the best HC's in the history of the NFL then you sign that back-loaded contract.
Did you see the deal Osweiler got this past off season? If they want to keep him they are going to have to tag him, or pay him like he's a starter to not start...does that make sense? JG wants to play...and get paid. If he believes he's good, which he should, he'll believe he can help another team win. It's football...you always take the money when you can get it, it might not be there next year.

That number is with 26 players on the roster in 2018. Thats 20 plus players they have to sign. It doesn't make any economic sense to have 2 QB's making that much money. Jimmy is getting traded this off season. Nobody is paying a QB 20 million dollars a year to not play.

Eastern Illinois product it's easy to write this story. It'd be great for this years 3rd and next yrs 2nd rd. If the kid from ND slides to the 2nd Rd the Bears would seemingly be looking solid at QB for years.
Idd it is really mind blowing how many people wants to trade our 2rd round pick + some other mid to low rounds pick for Jimmy. Gimme Watson or kizer any day or Jimmy. Not to mention Jimmy has only one year left on his contract.
Hello Matt Cassel, Hello Matt Flynn.
btw how awesome did Barkley look in this first two games? If we were as successful as NE and already had our franchise QB, people would probably talk about trading for Barkley, because he looked good. But the following games he shat the bed.
To be fair...both Cassel and Flynn were 7th round picks. Jimmy comes with a bit more pedigree than those two.
Who knows? Nobody knows. Sure Jimmy was a higher touted prospect coming out, but we still dont know how he has developed doing his stay in NE. Watson and Kizer are higher touted prospect coming out of college. I rather take a chance on those guys than trading mulitple picks to NE. I fear will overpay with picks much like Texans did with Brock and money.

That's the thing, better prospect doesn't really mean much once you start playing. Leno was a 6th round pick, and is now a starting NFL LT, and while not great, definitely better then some of the LT's that went before him, for instance, Greg Robinson, drafted in the 2nd overall, people in LA are saying the bust label should be put on him, for those that like PFF, he was graded the lowest starting LT in that draft, and he's also been the most penalized.
Robinson had a far better pedigree, and if you took their first 3 games no doubt you'd take Robinson over Leno. Doesn't mean he is a better OT, and if we had traded for him and then gave him a huge contract people would be pissed and the GM would probably find themselves on the hot seat.
As for prospects, I think at worst Watson/Kizer are at least equal to Jimmy's potential and you have 4 years on a rookie deal instead of having to work a new starting qb contract from day 1.
