Are we the only ones bidding on the kid? If not, then it's not a buyer's market here. We don't dictate anything. Not with Bill Belichick. Watch. Belichick will get a sweet deal from some GM who has the draft picks burning a hole in his pocket.
This is likely. Pace has shown he has patience when looking for FAs and clearly values draft picks so I don't see him making this deal if a couple of other teams are willing to mortgage their future on getting Jimmy.
That is an excellent point I didn't think about. Pace isn't a fool who would mortgage our future like this. Pace doesn't strike me as a fool.
My feeling is that if you really want to trade for Garoppolo, the team has to protect itself because there’s potential downside to the deal. I would only do a deal that has clauses based on team performance and Garoppolo’s personal performance. I would give up a pick in the 2017 draft but not more than a third-rounder. In that situation, I would also include a pick in the 2018 draft that would have the performance clauses attached to it.
If Garoppolo puts up good numbers and the team wins, then by all means give up that 2018 first-rounder. He obviously was worth it. But if he ends up being just an ordinary player, then the pick that is conveyed must be much lower — perhaps another third-rounder or fourth-rounder. Such an approach has the potential to be a win-win for both teams and the team trading for Garoppolo protects itself and its future.
I highly doubt BB would agree to this.
Thoughts?
I see Gabe is using a similar rationale to what Ric is but I don't buy it. I don't feel the Pats want to trade Garoppolo at all but they may have no choice if it's get something for him or nothing if he signs elsewhere as a FA.
While Gabe makes an issue of Brady age what he doesn't acknowledge is that Brady is signed through 2019 and that all of his money is guaranteed. With cap hits of $22 mil each in 2018 and 2019 it's doubtful the Pats can kep both QBs which led to the drafting of Brissett who will still be playing under his rookie deal through 2019 as well.
So I would suggest that talent is not the issue at all but rather affordability. If they could find a way to keep him I believe they would but from here that doesn't seem likely and if Belicheat also realizes it he's gonna do what he can to max out a return for him in trade if he goes that route.
I also don't believe what Matt Cassel or any other former NE Q did or didn't do after leaving NE is more relevant than the value JG may have to a team in need of a young starter. If he was worth a late 2nd round pick 3 years ago he's worth that much or more now and if you'd have drafted him at that spot 3 years ago then you'd give at least that much for him now. I'm sure Belicheat hasn't "ruined" him so where's the depreciation gonna come from them.
I posted a possible trade using a similar formula only with as high as 2nd and 2018 conditional pick that would be scaled based on JGs success and the success of the team. As Gabe says if he comes up a winner then the price will be worth it and so will a longer term contract extension but doing it this way tempers the risk in the event he doesn't hit it big.
I don't think the NFL has those kind of protections ala NBA. Is there any NFL trades that had these clauses? This sounds like an NBA trade idea.
I would agree, no more then a 3rd and a 2018 pick; but the reality is that isn't going to get it done, the Browns, Jags, 49'rs are going to offer well better then that.
Sure. The Bradford trade has one and other have had them as well.
So then why put down a best offer from us and keep putting Garoppolo down even after you said we should have drafted him ourselves? You could be right and you could be wrong.
If Pace is interested the point is only to have a plan as to what he would and would not do as far as offers go. I'll leave that up to him.

Good luck selling that "conditional" thing to Belichick on this kid. It makes sense from our end, but if they do sell Garoppolo to a team there won't be any strings attached. Belichick isn't a rube like some of these other GMs. The crazy thing is that some stupid GM will pony up the draft picks. Watch. It will happen.

Don't know why this such a battleground.
It's all about what offer do you make if your interested and what's the most you'd give. Gabe was just suggesting one more approach is all. If Pace is interested he needs a plan to go with and this is an example of one. It's only a hypothetical for cripes sake not the fickin' Ten Commandments of Trade.
Who knows what NE will ask for or take or if they even shop him.
No one is suggesting anyone will dictate terms to NE only what may be reasonable offers that could be made. Obviously half of you are doing your level best to talk yourselves out of it but at the same time realize a need to move on from Cutler. Well here's at least one option for doing it.

Fine if you're all so positive others can and will make more attractive offers then I will no longer attempt to confuse you with facts or other possibilities seeing as your minds are made up. I gave up on debating people like this long ago so I'm out.

+1 And none of us knows what will happen or not happen here. I get that. It's just that this isn't some half-wit like Jerry Angelo we're talking about here. Belichick is "The Legend" in fleecing stupid GMs of draft picks for players who disappoint. It's what he does. And this is the Bears we're talking about. Couldn't you just see them lose their ass in a deal like this and fork over that 1st round 3rd overall draft pick? I can. It is so like something this stupid franchise would do.

You know what. There are far too many mind readers, clairvoyants, Amazing Kreskins, Nostradamus wannabes, and others of intelligence far superior to mine to compete for offering solid countering opinions so I guess I'll just keep 'em to myself and opt out of offering them.

Are you by chance my ex-wife's twin?
Hey, I'm wrong at least as much as I am right. I admit that. LOL, none of us knows what will happen. I think we've had so much bad luck with the QBs that some of us (me included) are scared to do anything :-)

C ya later.
Yes only soul is allowed to be a mind reader and clairvoyant. He knows, but we're all just using our emotions and idiocy
