Brian Hoyer open to mentoring young quarterback
LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Chicago Bears quarterback Brian Hoyer received full medical clearance on Monday to return for a forearm fracture; good news for the veteran as he approaches another round of free agency.
Hoyer, who signed a one-year deal with the Bears last offseason, played well enough in five starts to merit consideration for a backup role next season – depending on the extent of the Chicago’s expected quarterback shake-up.

Hoyer completed 134-of-200 passes for 1,445 yards and six touchdowns (98.0 quarterback rating) before he suffered a broken bone in his non-throwing arm at Green Bay on Oct. 20.
“The fact I got a chance to play, that obviously helps,” Hoyer said. “When I came here and signed as a backup, knowing my relationship with [offensive coordinator] Dowell Loggains and what he was trying to do on offense, and then you take that to the next level and get to play in some games and know your teammates a little better – that is something we started to build. Unfortunately it ended too soon.”
Hoyer is open to being a mentor to a young quarterback (presuming Chicago actually obtains one) next fall. He filled a similar role in Cleveland when the Browns drafted Johnny Manziel in 2014. Manziel ended up being such a disappointment that Hoyer started 13 games that year before he went to Houston in 2015.
“I kind of did that with Johnny,” Hoyer said. “Look, I’m a good teammate. I’ve been around. I have a lot to offer in that regard. But I also think, and this is what I said in Cleveland, the best way to show a young guy how to do it is to do it well and just do your job. But I really have a lot of confidence that playing in these four games here really re-emphasized that for me. Just proving to myself I can play at this level.”
Matt Barkley is also in the mix for a reserve spot on the depth chart, but Barkley tossed 10 interceptions over the final three weeks.
