I've come around on drafting a franchise LT.
1. LT - 2025 off season solution: We trade picks 16 & 37 (from Carolina) to move up to 7. With pick 7 we select Kelvin Banks Jr. who should be a top 7 pick. I think we end up with pick 16 and Carolinahas the potential to be among the top 3 worst so this is just spitballing.
2. C – Shelton Coleman: The absolute disaster of the IOL has been Coleman. He has quite literally been knocked on his rear end countless times while getting overpowered by larger Nose and D tackles. His snapping has caused some problems as well as pre snap confusion causing timing and penalty issues. 2024 regular season solution: Once Bates comes off IR, we insert him there and hope for the best. He has more experience at RG but as this point he is larger and probable quicker/stronger than Coleman which in and of itself is a massive improvement. 2025 off season solution: with our current 45th pick we select Tyler Booker from Alabama. As a 3 year starter he has settled into a guard role this year, after having played both tackle and guard in prior seasons. He is a very sturdy 6.4 320 lb specimen who has a great IQ, anchor, power, run/pass blocking skills. I think he transition to guard exceptionally well as he comes from pro system.
3. RG – Nate Davis: Nuf said, Davis has been a literal disaster for 2 seasons now and is the most obvious lineman to switch out for good in 2025. He has already been benched this for performance and after this season cutting him only costs 2M. 2024 regular season solution: Once Bates is moved over to C and Jenkins comes back to his LG spot, we move Matt Pryor over to RG and try to stabilize the IOL with this trio. If anything, Pryor should be a marginal to significant upgrade over Davis. 2025 off season solution: 2nd HR of the offseason, as we sign Trey Smith for RG with a 5/105M contract and 65M guaranteed. He gets a 30M signing bonus and his 2025 salary is 5M. 2025 cap hit is 11M and 2026 cap hit is 17M (11M salary + 6M SB). Guard salaries are skyrocketing, and Smith is on course to receive his 1st PB/AP. He resets the top of the market or ties it but after 2027 his guaranteed money is paid out.
I'll toss this out there regarding the OL. It will be far more helpful to evaluate the unit at the end of the season, versus us judging the unit at this point as if this is the end product. The tougher opponents will come after the bye week. Some of these guys may surprise us and do well - and better than we expected. Or not. I really don't expect Poles to add any starter-level players to the OL at this point mid-season... but hey, maybe he will. But I'm thinking this is our unit for 2024. I'm going to wait and see the full body of work at the end of the season and go from there.

But if we don't judge the unit every week, we will miss many opportunities to argue about it.

That's fine JABF, not everybody gets into looking at solutions for the Oline. But I will continue to update this thread occasionally as the college and NFL seasons progress. Quite frankly I don't think that 3 of these starting 5 will be here next year and that gives me reason to keep looking at in season or off season solutions. The one player I will probably keep harping about is Trey Smith as he is as of now the perfect fit for RG.

I would change two letters in your phrase. Drop an "e" and change one "e" to an "a". Thusly:
But if we don't judge the unit very weak, we will miss many opportunities to argue about it.

Malaga, I love the thread. And I do like talking about the OL all year long... LOL, I'm a nut that way for sure. My only point is that I will be trying to keep an open mind until the season is over. But, in reality, when someone has a bad game I'll probably come unglued that week and go full-meatball.

The screaming and swearing during the game is therapeutic and well deserved because this team puts us through hell week in and week out.
I cannot imagine watching a Bears game and being unable to express myself emotionally.
The reason why I yell is because I love them so much. Their success matters to me, for what reason I'll never fully understand, but dangit I need them to win and if swearing at the TV helps that then I'm gonna let it rip.

That's true. I didn't consider that angle. Maybe we could devise a method of objective analysis of the OL players - that goes far beyond the PFF model. I was talking with riczaj01 the other night about this... and after a few brewski's we came upon the perfect solution. Would it be possible for you to let the rubber chicken view the All-22 film on the OL play each week, and just relay to the messageboard here, the final grades for each player? I know this is a lot of extra work on your part, with the taking of careful notes and all... but the chicken would probably be okay with it (I know he's an OL zealot too). In fact let the little guy invite over a couple of his buddies - if he would feel more comfortable that way. And maybe we can take a collection here on the messageboard & chip in beer money for them if that is helpful. Would Mrs BIH be okay with a house full of rubber chickens though (the smoking and drinking and general hell-raising might be a lot to put up with)... just wondering.

Whoa, rubber chickens with MSU degrees? I don't think I could handle that.
