I don't know what to make of Kramer... I just have a feeling he's not starter quality. He was a 6th round draft pick and has struggled been off and on the practice squad. If he can't beat out the woefully bad Coleman Shelton, he must not be very good. Maybe he is destined to be a career backup in the NFL.
As a concept I would like to get away from using late round draft picks on OL that are expected to start. I'm not saying you support that with that post I'm just saying.
We have a golden opportunity to build a special line, all on rookie contracts, in the 2025 draft and that's what this team needs. Draft guys with the expectation to start on Day 1 and then another one who is a high quality backup.
A starting LT on a rookie deal saves $25M. LG is another $15M. That savings pays for an FA C with lots of money left over.
The problem with your suggestion TMP ( and Ric's) to some degree is that we can't waste any of Caleb's rookie contract on developing línemen. They have to be NFL ready plug & play. We have to sign a minimum of 1 lineman in FA. That could be Trey Smith.

+1 I like that approach. I have nothing against taking a shot at a developmental project OL guy, if the team is not expecting him to be a starter. Hey, maybe someday he's a starter quality player... but don't draft with the plan of that guy BEING a starter. More than likely he will develop into a solid backup if you drafted well. And if by surprise he is something more than that, great. I'd be fine if they drafted a project OL guy every year that way. Or at least every other year. But Poles needs to invest real resources into those OL starting positions (draft and FA).

I'm thinking this should be a dual-track approach to the OL from here on out. Yes, draft OL in the first and second rounds next year and add one big FA signing. You're going to have to do both I think with 4 starting positions needing upgrades. And also, I do hope Poles is adding a developmental guy from time to time... not because the Bears are in crisis mode and need to do that. But rather they have a great OL of starters and can afford to buy a lottery ticket, drafting a late round guy to develop. But first the focus needs to be on those 4 starting positions that are not very good right now. We are starting guys who (at best) are depth players.

Amegadjie is actually a 3rd rounder who might be ready next at LG if we can get him snaps in garbage time. Then you draft 2 and sign one in FA.

I think Amegadjie is a special case in that Poles figured he was a 1st or high-2nd round talent who dropped due to the surgically repaired leg. He had to be thinking it would be a redshirt season for him - that's why he dropped in the draft. Nobody is going to give a 1st round pick for a redshirt OL. My point is that he is not your typical mid-round draft guy. He does have real talent, if he can stay healthy. He looks like a natural LT and not an interior OL guy. Poles is gambling that he can take over LT next year. But who knows, right?

I don't but would rather draft a bonafide upside talent in the 1st round for LT. If we go that route you sign 1 IOL (I hate to beat it to death but Smith makes so much sense at RG), and then you can combine 1 2nd with our 1st to move up higher. That leaves the other 2nd for a C.

I don't know. Can the Bears upgrade the offensive line with only a 5th and 7th round picks in the 2025 draft?
They traded their 6th rounder to Seattle, and if Justin Fields sees more than 51% of the snaps, that pick becomes a 4th rounder. There's no way Poles spends a lofty 4th round pick on an offensive lineman unless it's by trade.

I’d keep Jenkins unless he has some sort of serious injury this season and resign him to a 2 year prove it deal.
I thought he was a really solid player until his game deteriorated this season. Maybe he's playing hurt and that is the reason. But the guy has not been the same player as he has been in past seasons. And he seems to struggle to stay healthy. You can't count on him. Someone will pay him decent money... probably Nate Davis kind of money. I don't feel comfortable with the Bears paying him that money. Sad to see him leave, but he's a liability here now. We need a good player at LG, and one who shows up on game days. Jenkins is not that guy.
Backup player at this point. Might be better served in this role than as a starter.

And he may have been playing hurt, and that caused him to struggle as he has at times this season. We KNOW he has played better. It's not like some guy who has never been good. When healthy, he has been as good (or better) than most interior offensive linemen. That is the head scratcher for me. He is too young to be declining - so there must be a reason behind it. And I do feel sorry for the guy not being able to stay healthy.
