I'm finding this discussion kind of amusing. Didn't we have a similar discussion about who to draft in the first round in 2023? As I recall, Poles was getting eviscerated here (and on most of social media) for not taking Jalen Carter and taking Darnell Wright (OT). We took Gervon Dexter instead in the 2nd round. And we were told by several posters here and elsewhere that what a mistake that was. And that we could have gotten an OT of Wright's caliber on day 2.
Just look at Jalen Carter's stats for the 2024 season and compare them to Dexter's. I sure hope Poles makes several more of this kind of "mistake" continuously in the future. Not only are Dexter's number way better, but we also have 2 or 3 other DL players who are outperforming Carter.
Poles has made his share of mistakes. IMO the most notable were getting Chase Claypool and Nate Davis. But there have been others. I am assuming that many of these are part of the learning curve of a rookie GM growing into the job. But only time will tell on that.
I'm not too sure on that. I'm not sure the learning curve ever ends. It's arc just changes. And even an expert GM is going to continue to have duds. None of these guys is perfect. It just doesn't happen. The good just has to keep outweighing the bad.
Every GM makes mistakes. Claypool and Davis are meaningless in the grand scheme of Poles’ work.

Random Thoughts About Trading Up For LT
1) It has to be a Franchise level guy. It cannot be a B+ Prospect or the third best or some pick where we settle for somebody.
2) We should only be trading up for a LT. I do not see another position on the field that warrants a move for us up from 20 to 7 or 5.
3) We have to wait until the moment the pick will be made. We can’t do this a week ahead of time. So once the 4th pick goes, we have to make a phone call. We need to see how the draft board literally falls beforehand.
4) This will cost us. Flip the roles for a minute. Say that we have the 5 pick and somebody at 20 calls. What would we as a fanbase want? I’d want a first, second and then another second or a third. But realistically speaking, even if I was happy with our roster I’d still want to take a star at 5. Why not? My point is, we will have to pay someone and maybe even find a sucker like we did at Carolina.
5) Whoever we trade with at 5 will need to have their QB position settled. If they need a QB forget it.

I reserve the right to change my vote after the season and FA are done. But if I’m drafting 15-20 right now, I’m drafting a center. Enough screwing around with this. Brax and Amegadjie can hold down the LT spot. According to the sacred chart, to trade up from 25 to 5 to draft a LT we don’t need would cost the Bears a first round draft pick and still leave us the big hole at center. That is beyond stupid.

We don't know anything about how Kiran will do in a game.
But yeah, if we're on the board at 20 I'd be happy to take BPA IOL. We need the linemen.

I think that you and I are basically saying the same thing. Learning from your mistakes should reduce both the frequency as well as the impact of your mistakes. But it never eliminates them.
Being a GM is similar to being a full-time stock market investor. No one ever hits on 100% of their investments. But if you can consistently hit 60% - 70%, you can get very rich.

Imagine Carter and Dexter as your tackles and Sweat and Booker as your DEs. What has Wright done? He regularly gets beat by good speed rushers, and leads the OL in sacks this season (4 in 5 games).
