Fields seems to be improving week by week in a better system (OL, O coaches & for that matter head coach). It is not a given that he won't have a better career than Caleb Williams if the Bears can't fix this horribly broken offense.
Well he does have a Hall of Fame HC helping him. Something the Bears refused to get with Jim Harbaugh.
When was the last time Fields had a 350+ passing game for the season? When was the last time he accounted for 90% of offensive yards? Fields had legit run game when he was in Chicago to help him.
Also let's not pretend the Steelers don't have a legit defense helping Fields out. Fields also only has 2 regular season TD's and one INT. He's not lighting it up at the Steelers. He's playing game manager for them. Doing enough to not cost his team the W. He can't produce when you need him to.
I'm willing to bet, if you put Williams on the Steelers. He would be having rookie of the year talks already. Williams is far more talented than Fields can ever be.
I don't disagree. Yeah, Fields is on a better team than Caleb. On the right team I believe Caleb's ceiling is a lot higher than Fields. But he's on the Bears team.

Is he on a better team? Our ol stinks but our team is not shabby The results are
Selective stats are great but he is still winning. Steelers have a defense helping JF. Bears have a defense helping CW. When was the last time JF passed more than 50 times. You normally get lots of passing yards when you do that. When is the last time CW got the kind of running yards JF did? They count too. I mean we can do this all day long. But picking stuff out that supports a certain viewpoint shouldn’t be the goal. And I’m not sure that anyone was saying JF is better than CW. But he is having better results. Yes, there are CERTAINLY extenuating circumstances. But why do they count when evaluating CW and not JF. The only take away from all of this as far as I’m concerned was that JF was not as bad as some painted him to be. You can win with him if you support him properly. I honestly thought we had done that with CW but the OL and coaching is letting him down. It always seems to be something
Yes but Williams doesn't have a supporting OC, Oline coach, Oline play, but he has inconsistence WR play, lack luster RB, horrible personal decision on field. Moore been ok, Rome has been inconsistent at times. Too many drop passes for a top 10 pick in my opinion. Allen has been lack luster on the side line. Swift was a terrible signing. I rather have Monty back or draft his replacement. They don't like having Kmet on the field.
Fields has a Hall of Fame HC, better oline, better OC, better run play, better play calling.
Fields is in his 4th year in the NFL and is asked to be a game manager. Dude only has 2 TD's for the season and one Int. Kinda expect more from a Vet player who everyone feels was irreplaceable. Williams is in game 3 who broke Bears rookie passing yard record. He also has been showing real flashes that even Fields doesn't show in year 4.
Fields is in year 4 and is asked to be a game manager.
Also keep in mind. This is the Steelers defense right now. That's very legendary. Our defense aint close to that level.
Don’t want to get into a JF vs CW thing. My point was and is that JF is not a bad QB. Certainly not as bad as people made out. There were reasons for his lack of success here

Steelers defense has given up 26 points in 3 games. You'd probably be 3-0 at that point. Widest margin of victory is 10 points in those 3 games. I'd say the Steelers offense is still a work in progress.

I still disagree, until JF can win games without a defense averaging 8.7 scoring points allowed per game. I see him as nothing more than a low tier QB with a ceiling of a game manager mid to late 20's out of 32 starting QBs. That's with a Hall of Fame HC helping disguise JF issues.
I will be expecting that from CW in the future as well. Usually Year 3 is when you should see huge signs of improvements. Josh Allen for example.

It’s like when the manager gets fired in baseball.
It’s a lot easier to blame the manager, fire his ass, and appease the fans than it is to really analyze why things are messed up.
Had we kept Fields, traded the 1 for a haul, and took Odunze anyway, does anybody here honestly believe we would be worse than 1-2 and looking like a train wreck out there?
So the haul from the trade is a star player (it probably would’ve been DL) , 24R1 (OL?), 24R2 (OL or somebody else) then both 25R1 and 25R2.
Is that a worse situation than today?
For this season? No but long term YES.
If you keep Fields you're going to have to pay that man 40-50 million a year to be a starting QB. Fields has never been a 3k passing QB. That will hurt your ability to keep talent and sign new one in the offseason. With a rookie QB. You have 4 years of cheap contract plus a 5th year option.
Tomlin still refuses to name Fields as starting QB. His actions should say something. I do hope they keep Fields as a starter so we get an extra 4th rounder pick instead of 6th.
In 3 games, I've seen more flashes of great QB play in Williams than my 3 years watching Fields play. Fields only flashes came from his running ability.
Lot of things happening on offense isn't even on Williams. Allen dropped a TD, Rome dropped a TD along with a ton of rookie mistakes, Swift has been a horrible FA signing, new OC is worse than our last one having players who shouldn't even be on the field on the field. O line coach needs to be fired.
We passed up a great QB last year for a haul of picks. How did that turn out? Sometimes you just have to go after the talent.
I respectfully disagree.
In the 2025 draft we would have the following:
First Round x 2 (Ours plus the trade down.) Second Round x 3 (Ours, Carolina's, plus the trade down.) Third Round x 1 (Ours)
6 picks in the first 100.
We could rebuild the entire OL with high grade picks, they'd all be on rookie contracts and we'd have picks left over.

I can respect that but what happens if you never get a top 5 overall pick for the next 10-15 years? Its much harder finding good QB play outside the first overall pick. We would have to give up multiple first round picks to get our guy like other teams have done including the Texans, Chiefs, Panthers, and etc. You also got to understand how hard it is to get into the top 5. We barely got the #1 overall pick the first time and that was thanks for Lovie doing a last minute win for the Bucs. If he would of lost. We would of not got DJ Moore and CW. Then how shit show the Panthers were last year to give us the #1 overall pick while we won a few meaningless games for the #9 overall pick. We honestly could of been a top 5 pick had we not won meaningless games. We could of had a guy like Alt on the line. I get you want to be the Lions which is one super team in the NFC with a ton of talent everywhere. What happens when you got to pay all that talent in 4 years? I prefer going the Texans route and get your QB first then build around him. Its much easier having a top 10 QB support your team for the next 10-15 years than having a Super team like the 49ers or Lions for 5 years.

I agree. He's not bad.
He's also not top-10.
And it is kind of a binary thing. There's two types of QBs: A) the guys you pay huge money cuz they give you a shot at a deep run (i.e., the "top-10") B) Everyone else
Justin Fields had lots of chances last season to prove it. He didn't do it.

We have 3 of the following locked up. #1 being the hardest one to get. QB.
I believe that the perpetual search for the Next Mahomes or a Top 5 or Top 10 QB is detrimental to the long term building of a team.
It puts other priorities on the back burner and also makes the team one dimensional.
Yes obviously the QB needs to be good. At the same time he doesn’t have to be Aaron Rodgers either.
Then while it is great to have a great QB. The day comes where a high level QB gets paid a record setting deal thus detonating the salary cap and making building a supporting cast impossible.
My preference is that when you find somebody that is good enough at QB you build around him and it’ll make him look better than he really is.
But the odds of finding the next Mahomes / Rodgers / Brady is virtually impossible. I’d rather build a team.
