I'm all-in on getting someone better than Shelton, but Connor McGovern isn't as good as Shelton. We'd just be adding a guy in the Shelton/Bates level category. We sure don't need another one of them. I'd give Kramer a shot at C before I'd add another mediocre (or worse) guy.

Sigh.... yeah, I just want them to do SOMETHING. But sometimes that can be a step back

They cherry-picked some PFF stats for that article. First of all he is primarily a LG. He has played some C in past seasons (12 snaps in 2021, and 88 in 2022, zero in 2023). He has played 102 snaps at C this year. His pass blocking this season graded out at 41.3 (considerably lower than Shelton's poor grade of 55.6). If you look over his career stats he's given up 80 pressures, 16 hits on the quarterback and 8 sacks. That is considerably worse than Shelton's career (and Shelton is not very good himself).
I gotta believe the only way to truly fix this center problem is to identify a stud (maybe "THE" stud) in the upcoming draft and get that guy. Fix the problem right this time... no more of these mediocre band aid guys. I'm sick of them.

I'm seeing a lot of finger pointing on X but another BIG factor is the coaching & scheme. This has been a collasal collab failure between Waldron and the line and running game coaches. MPB, you thought we would not miss CollabAV but maybe we need it in chunks.

No question, the coaching staff has made mistakes. I totally agree with that. But, to be fair, it looks to me like Waldron has an OL that can't run block, and can't pass protect. So no running game. No passing game. And on top of that he has a rookie QB1. He has been dealt a tough hand. I think Ryan Poles dealt him that hand and he's trying to play it as best he can.
Ryan Poles made a BIG gamble that this cobbled together 2024 OL could get him through to 2025. That gamble failed. Miserably. I like Poles but he has 3 failed moves that have ticked me off:
Claypool
Velus Jones (EDIT: my brain isn't working yet this morning... I meant Nate Davis... sorry)
2024 whiff on the offensive line
Those 3 moves are on GM Ryan Poles. Yes, he has done some very good things and I hope he can get the team on track. But an offense without an NFL quality offensive line is a big fail in my book. Build a good OL and prosper. The great teams have one. We don't.

Those are all failures for sure. But what is refreshing it seems about Poles, and Briggs and Brown brought it up on their show on CHGO, he's very willing to admit a mistake and move on from it. He moved on from Claypool even though he gave up good draft capital to get him. He worked to surround Williams with playmakers when he didn't do that for Fields, etc. I have to believe he'd be willing to move on from Davis if he thought it would improve the team and he'll attack the offensive line this off-season.

I believe that too and never doubted it.
But....that's too late. You would have wasted an entire year of CW's development and rookie contract cuz you didn't put together just a adequate OL. I repeat--Poles had the $$ to spend in FA this March and there were iOLs who would have helped.

Coaches might not be good enough, but it's always joes more than the x's and o's. Great players will make mid coaches look great, and bad players will make great coaches look mid.
Now can a coach ask his players to do to much and more then they are capable of therefore setting them up to fail; yes(Nagy). But Can you also have a guy that just isn't capable of doing anything to begin with, also yes, VJJ all the size/speed, no hands...no hands means no use. Probably better examples of bad players but its the most current. Or you could have a player that's just decided to collect a check and not really want to play, Nate Davis.
if you are a coach and you have no skill/talent or guys that have talent but don't want to play there is no fixing that. there is no O you can run to hide it. Problem is, it's all on the OL right now. Shelton, Bates, Davis are all hurt or lack skill/talent. There is no scheme that doesn't rely on the IOL doing something and this IOL cannot do anything. You cannot teach a guy to not get pushed back b/c he's weak; there is no technique to defend against someone bigger and stronger then you and mauling you as an linemen in the nfl.

And I'd toss in the point that he is costing over $11-million dollars this season. And if they would have to cut him this season (not saying they will) it is over $12-million dollars dead cap hit. The Bears could have done a lot with that kind of money.
