Justin Fields Two first round picks Two second round picks Star Player
Or
Caleb Williams
Option #1 is looking more and more right by the week.
I’m far from saying CW was not the right choice. I mean just two games. But I agree with it not being just about Fields
Come on guys. Did anyone ever say: "ALL of the Bears problems are due to Justin Fields"?
NOPE, no one ever said that. Literally no one.
But when you don't have a QB, yeah that's a fricken MASSIVE PROBLEM. We saw for 3 years, and now a 4th in Pittsburgh, that Justin Fields isn't ever gonna be a top-10 NFL passer. And if you're QB isn't a top-10 NFL passer, your team is never gonna be a true perennial contender. Never. You are completely wasting your time in the modern NFL trying to win consistently, esp in the playoffs, with a half-ass passer at QB. Heck, even guys like Dak and Cousins have struggled to win playoff games and both of them are light years better passers than Fields is.
Moving on from Fields was the correct decision and that is independent of whether Poles handled the OL well enough or not. As I pointed out, he had the $$ to sign OLs in FA and he bargain shopped instead while hoping Nate Davis was gonna bounce back in 2024. Thus far, that decision isn't aging very well.
When it was Justin Fields it was that he held the ball too long.
Now the OL is bad.
Fields did hold the ball too long. ALL THE TIME. That's an indisputable fact on tape.
And last night, in his 2nd game CWilliams was already getting the ball out far quicker, 16th fastest in the NFL, Fields was always ranked at the bottom.

Best you can hope for w/Fields as a passer is 15-20 range, and you'd be lucky w/that. He's playing in Pitt like he did here, as a bridge/backup level. sup 20 points in the first 2 games, and had a whopping 117 yards passing this past week, last week it was 156.
Caleb last night had 176 against a far harsher opponent, in his 2nd game.
Two games in and you already want them gone? Dude, we have a new OC, new receiving corps and a rookie QB w/ zero experience. Give them time.
Everyone knows I wasn't a fan of keeping Flus. He has a terrible record as a HC and isn't known for picking great staff. Waldron is proving to be a worse OC than our last one. Why wasn't Kmet targeted once in the first half of the 2nd game? Why does he not scheme around his players? Not blaming Williams as he is a rookie but am concern on his low throws. Again, a good coach can fix that.
When I see a coach like Jim Harbaugh come in and fix a team and make them look like a playoff team in 2 games. I expect a bit more from Flus who's been here for 3 years.
his amazing 177 yards passing yesterday was proof 100% scapegoated.
He was PART of the problem, not THE problem. Just like Mitch, Cutler and everyone in between. No HC/OC can build an effective O w/the OL being completely ignored. No Qb can function w/the OL being a welcome matt.
Romo is the only one I have ever seen have NO OL and function at any kind of functional level. Fields is NOT Romo, not by a long shot. Fields couldn't even win the starting job in Pitt w/a spent burned out and injured Wilson. Took Wilson's inability to find the field for Fields to get a shot. He was not scapegoated, he just one in a long list of issues.
It was never Justin Fields v Caleb Williams.
It was:

Make sure you add in his 30-40 million dollar contract for 3-5 years when doing that list.
I still take a rookie QB even if they're at the same level of Fields which is very bottom for a quarter of the price.

Yeah, don't go there. Harbaugh was a guy many of us wanted. Personally though I knew the Bears would never go with him. He does not fit the mold of a "gentleman" coach. Of course, the mold of a winning coach is what we want, but that was not our decision.

I'm sympathetic to your position. I wanted Flus gone last Feb and align a whole new hierarchy (QB-OC-HC) all on the same timeline, all tied together. They chose to scapegoat Getsy and keep Flus despite Harbaugh being available.
You had a proven, successful HC in both pro and college who knows QBs and knows offense like the back of his hand right there for taking and you PASSED on that.
For Flus. A guy who still can't get challenges right in year 3.
Okayyyyyyyyy.....
Like I said earlier, I have defended Poles and still do. I think he's done way more good than bad. I still have faith that he has us on the right path and things are looking up. But if they are two major decisions of his--things he did NOT do--that loom out there as possible future career-wreckers:
He passed on CJ Stroud He passed on Jim Harbaugh
If those decisions end up looking really bad, he's cooked.

How much success is because of Poles and not by luck? What I mean by that is how many GM's get back to back first overall picks. Trades with a franchise with a horrible owner and front office. Is the worse franchise in the league, gets a haul of picks, a top 10-15 WR while getting the #1 overall pick and #9 overall pick the following year? I expect the Panthers 2nd round pick to be #33 with the way Young is playing.
I can understand passing on CJ Stroud as this team needed more talent everywhere. Passing on Jim Harbaugh made zero sense and those who were happy with it all thought Jim was washed up or had other issues with him. The man has a proven history of winning. Go to any Chargers forum and they will tell you the culture is 100% better under Jim Harbaugh than before. That's what we need here. Now we have players like DJ Moore showing signs of frustration. Things we didn't see from him last year. The culture isn't looking good here.
Again I don't know if Poles was backing his "friend" Flus or if ownership once again wanted to be cheap. Going by history. I'm going to assume its ownership not wanting to pay 2 HC at the same time.
I'm also very concern how we're developing our #9 overall pick. He has butter fingers. First career catch was a fumble and he dropped an easy TD that Williams threw perfectly to him. Then him not running routes properly, I expect more from a #9 overall pick and a player who would of been drafted higher if Harrison JR and Nabers weren't in the same draft. Harrison Jr and Nabers are looking legit so why isn't Rome? Nabers has Daniel Jones throwing him the ball too. Poles/Flus's Offensive staff is very concerning. Oline coach needs to be fired. WR coach can't develop a highly respected prospect. OC is putting some very questionable personal decisions on the field at the wrong time. For example can we stop with the failed Gerald Everett experiment? Kmet is a better receiving TE and having Gerald Everett drop a perfect pass will kill drives like it did yesterday. Also would be nice to use Herbert a bit more. 2 carries shouldn't be all he got against Houston.
The only positive thing keeping Flus is the defense but I don't want BEARS FOOTBALL. You don't win that way anymore. I want modern NFL football. 24+ points scored by offenses. Not 7 points in 2 games. I can understand if we lacked skill players or vet players but we don't. We have two top 10-15 WRs, a #9 overall WR, and a top 10 receiving TE. This should not be happening.

I "can see" it too. Most fans and writers agreed with the decision at the time.
BUT....popular doesn't necessarily mean correct. Stroud certainly looks like a long-term star to me. Guy is really really good and only gonna get better. We passed on him. We passed on Mahomes under Pace. If Williams somehow doesn't pan out, and he passed over Stroud to get him, then yeah that's gonna come down hard on Ryan Poles and deservedly so.
