I've been railing on this secondary for a good part of the season. Part of the issue is obviously the "starters" we had were injured and we were depending on guys who were cut from other teams to start for us. Much like our receiver crew on offense. We need depth all across the board. Signing a combo of Trumain Johnson and Berry is gonna cost big time dollars...which we have, but probably wouldn't leave us with much room...so you're gonna have to target 1 or the other IMO.
Butkus, I agree but if we don't retain Cutler and cut him then should have about 75M total CAP. Considering that both Berry and Johnson (or Gilmore) will cost about 28M (14M esch AAV) worst case that will leave 47M. You sign AJ at a discount of 12M AAV and those 3 should be your FA splashes. That still leaves you with 35M to play with.

Yeah...we'll see. There are some other teams who will have a surplus of space too so it will be interesting.

No doubt, another factor is certainly what other teams will offer apart from the $$$. A player may indeed decide to take the same or similar amount if he thinks the chances for success are better or even the team culture. Anything is possible.
At this stage in the game, I'll take a top 5 defense who can get us to 8-8 routinely. If that's all we have to do is fix the secondary to make this a stout defense, let's do it. In the meantime, start picking up a QB each draft. Keep the defense strong until we find that QB who can make us more than a long shot playoff team.
Belli, I think it is a deep enough draft where you could go Allen, Falk, and CB in the 3rd. We pick high enough where that 3rd round CB would be a 2nd rounder in other drafts. It is a deep class.
Not exactly sure what 'deep' means in the draft. I always hear about the draft being 'deep' in (x) position but don't see the talent in the NFL after all's said and done. Last year's draft class was deep at DL. Lots of those deep DL aren't showing much yet so the idea of a deep DB class doesn't have me overly excited.
At the end of the day I think it comes down to a few simple things: 1. Good scouting 2. Patience by the FO which allows the GM to pick his guys (not the FOs guys) and let them develop. 3. Patience with the coaching structure which allows players to develop with continuity in the same system so they can actually get better.

Yeah, I get what you are saying about all prospects panning out. More busts than boom. But I am really hoping we land Allen at 3 if the Browns taken Garrett and the 49ers take Trubisky. Allen is about the most NFL ready talent of all the prospects and could be an impact starter. I know the back 4 needs desperate help but Allen to start the draft would be a no brainer for me.

Assuming he doesn't get caught hitting the bong or his girlfriend and assuming he doesn't screw his body up overtraining for the underwear Olympics.
I agree though. Garrett and Allen are no brainers. If we pick at the #3 spot we should be able to land Allen. THe only way this doesn't play out is A) Allen or Garrett **** up somehow in the next few months B) Cleveland takes Allen to fix their DL in which case SF would prolly take Garrett and we'd be left with (I'm actually not sure at this stage in the game because I haven't done a ton of research into Draft Prospects, YET.)

B is a real possibility. And then the other way we don't get one of them is that we drop from #3. If we do, they will both be off the board. But maybe a good GM can get them anyway?
Aside from the secondary, the Bears needs a better backup for Goldman.
Agree, it's not in the mix as far as this thread goes but without a doubt we do need a NT who can handle double teams and clog the middle to back Goldman. I was pretty shocked we let Terry Williams go with those final cuts. I though he showed some promise and had the size Sutton lacked.
After seeing the Keystone Cops in action yesterday I have come to the conclusion that the FO should spend a good amount of off season resources (FA/Draft) on as many impact starters as possible with a minimum of 3 new starters out of the possible 5 positions being 2 CB, 1 nickelbacl, and 2 safeties(FA - who are still young enough to be around for when the competitive window starts). So having said that I hope it pans out this way:
1. We sign one of Trumaine Johnson or Stephen Gilmore to be our impact CB. 2. We target Eric Berry as our number 1 priority safety and target Tony Jefferson as a fallback. 3. We target impact safety or CB with our 2nd pick overall (This draft class is deep with CB candidates). 4. Fuller is considered a candidate to move to the FS as an alternative plan.
FS has got to be at the top of the wish list for the offseason. Berry is a guy we can use and he won't come cheap but our attempts to patch holes with cheaper solutions at key positions isn't working everywhere. For the most part we're only getting what we pay for. At some point in time Pace has to be willing to pay for the best and as far as Safeties go Berry is all that.
As much as I like Amos as a ballhawk he's been a major disappointment and I think proven to be little more than an in the box SS type. He's a guy we need to upgrade.
Can Kyle Fuller even play FS and furthermore why do they seem so hesitant to even try him there? Is it him or is it the coaches? Right now he's behaving like he wants out of Chicago so even though he's still under contract in 2017 at the moment I see more doubt in him than I do in any other high draft pick on the team. I'm really not sure we can count on him for anything right now.
Tracy Porter's health and the uncertainty of what we have in the younger guys tells me we need to draft more DBs especially if this draft is deep in them. Top CBs are even more pricey than a top FS like Berry so I'm not sure we'll get both in FA. It's more likely one or the other.
I think Hall can play but his lack of speed may limit him if he's a starter. Callahan and LeBlanc give up a lot of size at CB but both are strong prospects for the slot. Provided the defensive coaching staff stays intact I still have confidence Ed Donatell will develop some talent out of some of what he has but we do need to add more top shelf talent in both FA and the draft.

Another way to phrase that is: the Bears need a more durable NT than Goldman. He's been out/will be out 10 of the team's 16 games this season.
This serves as a not so subtle reminder: the Bears first priority is to figure out what the hell is going on with our strength, conditioning, nutrition programs.
