After seeing the Keystone Cops in action yesterday I have come to the conclusion that the FO should spend a good amount of off season resources (FA/Draft) on as many impact starters as possible with a minimum of 3 new starters out of the possible 5 positions being 2 CB, 1 nickelbacl, and 2 safeties(FA - who are still young enough to be around for when the competitive window starts). So having said that I hope it pans out this way:

1. We sign one of Trumaine Johnson or Stephen Gilmore to be our impact CB.
2. We target Eric Berry as our number 1 priority safety and target Tony Jefferson as a fallback.
3. We target impact safety or CB with our 2nd pick overall (This draft class is deep with CB candidates).
4. Fuller is considered a candidate to move to the FS as an alternative plan.

That is the whole premise of this thread Ric. Before yesterday's debacle I was of the thought that a FA splash for one impact CB or safety and then one second tier DB would be enough of an off season. But now I think it would be great and necessary to get 2 impact starters if possible in FA. Thus a combo like Gilmore or Johnson (Though he has not really had a great season) and Jefferson or Berry and a second tier CB. Then the 3rd pick can be dedicated to a great safety or CB. It is a fluid and complicated proposition because of the QB requirement.

That's exactly right. You have to shuffle around the QB requirement. That is why teams that do not have to worry about picking a QB have more flexibility and (i think) success in the draft. The other positions do not have such a high failure rate (or impact) and so teams can hit on more of their picks. It would really be great to have that position settled and not worry about picking a QB. As opposed to the way we do it. NOT having the position settled and not worry about picking a QB.

At this stage in the game, I'll take a top 5 defense who can get us to 8-8 routinely. If that's all we have to do is fix the secondary to make this a stout defense, let's do it. In the meantime, start picking up a QB each draft. Keep the defense strong until we find that QB who can make us more than a long shot playoff team.

Belli, I think it is a deep enough draft where you could go Allen, Falk, and CB in the 3rd. We pick high enough where that 3rd round CB would be a 2nd rounder in other drafts. It is a deep class.

It sure looks to me like there will be a QB available where we draft in the 2nd round (high 2nd round pick, ~35th overall pick of this draft), that will have very similar raw talent to the guys touted as going in the top-5 picks of this draft. Even if we did draft a QB with our 1st round pick, I doubt if that person would shine the first season either. This is a QB class that is going to yield some "projects" at QB. But that doesn't mean they don't have the ability to be true solid franchise QB's if they go to a team that will develop them properly.

I'd be tempted to draft BPA with our 1st round pick, and that won't be a QB. I just don't see a QB that gifted in this draft. Anyway, draft BPA, and that will probably be one of the stellar D guys in this draft. Then in the 2nd round draft the QB you have graded as being worthy of the pick (there sure looks like that level of QB should be there at that 35th pick for us). Work with that guy in 2017 to see what we have. If he doesn't look like "The Guy" then go back to the draft again. It is a shame we didn't start this QB process a year or two ago.

I've been railing on this secondary for a good part of the season. Part of the issue is obviously the "starters" we had were injured and we were depending on guys who were cut from other teams to start for us. Much like our receiver crew on offense. We need depth all across the board. Signing a combo of Trumain Johnson and Berry is gonna cost big time dollars...which we have, but probably wouldn't leave us with much room...so you're gonna have to target 1 or the other IMO.
