Watched it. Bears should hang on to him unless they get a ridiculous offer.
But honestly he could backup for most teams and could start for a few right now. Have you guys seen how bad some teams are at QB? Several teams have nothing.
Oddly enough Pitt could use him.JT O on his YouTube channel eviscerated Fields. Said watching that tape from the bills game, if he didn't know who that was, or what he could do with his legs, he wouldn't understand why he was still on the roster. Bills could use him as a backup also, even if Mitch hadn't got hurt. But ya you don't take his actual value bc it can only go up. And the only reason to even consider it is if you think Rypien is close to him.
Yeah Pitt has a washed up formerly good QB (Wilson) and a guy who struggles to throw for 2500 yards (Fields). They have nothing. Vegas has nothing. Minnesota has nothing. New England has not much better.

Its a desert out there.
Not that I think it will happen, I think the Bears might have found a keeper, even if he never becomes a top 5 or 10, but even if he busted the problem will not be they didn't keep Fields, the day Williams was drafted he was more prepared to play in the NFL then Fields is right now. Mitch and Fields might never have amounted to anything on their own, but it's a good study on why taking a qb before a team is ready to support them via, HC/OC, OL and weapons is a terrible mistake. Any shot either could have had died the day they were drafted by coaches that didn't want them and/or teams that couldn't help them. Their OL's were weak and the players they threw to their first year was a joke.
Odd both are terrible all on their own, but for similar reasons, but came from completely different college backgrounds. One never played enough, the other played plenty but never had to work b/c of the talent gap between his teammates and the other team. Williams got to play plenty, but was forced to work b/c his last year there was no real talent gap; and if there was one it was the other team that likely had the advantage. But it sounds like he's been working on all aspects of being a qb before even college.

Bagent is the classic "add a QB every year and keep the best one as your backup" example. Personally I'm not in favor of drafting late round QBs in hopes they become a backup. I'd rather add a vet in FA like Chase Daniel or even Mitch because...well...backup.
But
I do like Poles so far adding a UDFA QB that has been productive and (and maybe won things/awards) to see what is there. These are the guys that (IMO) will work their butts off to get better. Austin Reed is another great example: played on 4 winning teams, 138 TD to 36 INTs, won a DIV2 national championship. This is a guy you take a chance on.

I lost track of how many times JT said "brutal."
Not to sound like I'm rubbing it in, but I want everyone to imagine an alternate timeline where the Bears traded away the first pick to stick with Justin. So Caleb is on a another team doing the things we he have seem him do this preseason while Justin has been performing like he has. Half the Bears fandom would be on suicide watch now.

half of Bears fandom wanted to do that. (....brasil goes back to edit some old posts...) Be right back.

You don't have to go back to look for mine. I was in that camp. I still believe he is a good QB and given the right place can be good. Steelers also have an OL issue. But I am completely on board that Williams seems to be a couple of steps up. Getting Williams was the right move

I don't know if you add a QB every year. But I agree that you add QBs to your roster on day 3 in the draft or as an UDFA, where convenient. Obviously if you have someone who might fill another position of need, you take care of the position of need.
Assuming you have a solid offensive staff and a decent OL as well as offensive skill players, take a good prospect (like Reed). As Reed develops and as Bagent gets closer to the ed of his rookie contract, Bagent becomes both expendable to us as well as attractive to any teams needy for a QB. And hopefully you can get as much as an early day 3 pick for someone like Bagent.
Turning an undrafted FA into a solid backup QB and then into a 4th or 5th round pick every 2 or 3 years isn't a bad deal.
thing about day 3 picks or udfa is, other than K/P odds are they aren't going to work out, and most are just hoping to stick on ST's or depth if at all. If you end up w/a backup qb w/one of those picks you've got a massive win. If you get that lottery pick like a Purdy or Bagent or the magical unicorn in Brady you've set your franchise up in a way that will benefit it for 20 years.
I absolutely love the combination of Williams and Bagent. Bagent is either going to be a great backup for the Bears or great trade bait. Perfect scenario.

Guys like Bagent and Reed know how to win and excel. I like that we’re bringing in guys like this to see if their skill set is transferable to the NFL. They’re already driven individuals and will not shy away from putting in the effort.
