We had the tank year-1 (3 wins), then last year (7 wins). As we are about to begin year-3 with Poles & Eberflus, how are you feeling about the Bears at this point? It is kind of a milestone we are passing here with Caleb on board and the roster looking like it is improved... I just thought I'd touch base with everyone on how they were feeling about the team. We can revisit this mid-season and after the season is in the books. So this isn't etched in stone and we can make adjustments later.

This is SO premature, but to my eyes, Williams is going to be at least one step up from Fields. I just hope I didn't jinx him.
I can't put it into words, but for preseason 1, I can't point to any real disconnects on the offense. No stupid plays, no WTF moments, etc. Not sure if that is Williams or OC. I suspect OC driving Williams. I mean it was conspicuous in that it was not conspicuous. There always seemed to be something to marvel about in previous games when it came to offensive schemes or decisions. This just went smoothly. Like it's supposed to and I'm not accustomed to that. I like Waldron, I like what Poles has done. Eberflus was there last year and it didn't go well so either he changed drastically (the beard), or it was someone else. I suspect the new players Poles has brought on as well as the OC are the biggest thing. The other thing is that there is so much focus on the offense, that a shout out should be made to the DC. That has not lost a step and looks like it gained one.
But we are talking about one preseason game where not all the defensive starters played on the Bills. Not getting too excited yet, but it's good that I don't have too much bad to point to. I normally look for the weak spots. The main one I see is OL. It could be a major point of failure though.
Luck is the #1 reason we are in a great situation.
2023 we were looking at the #2 overall pick if it wasn't for Lovie team handing us the 1st overall pick.
Panthers GM being such a moron and giving up a haul for the #1 pick including their best offensive player.
Commanders going into tank mode and giving up their defensive player in Sweat.
Harbaugh coming back to the NFL and cleaning his team and letting go a Hall of Fame WR.
Having two top 10 picks in this years draft with one of them being the #1 overall pick. Draft a generational QB and having the Falcons become idiots and passing on a blue chip player in Rome.
If we weren't in the NFC North. I would say this team has the talent to win the division.
It's 2 game preseason, so I'm avoiding the hype train.
Doesn't mean I'm not ready to jump onboard; I want the turnaround we've all been waiting for.
I thought 'Flus coming onboard with the HC-only experiment and letting his DC handle things was a good idea and I still do. I was glad to see he recognized he needed to cut ties with Getsy. I don't think we'll ever know what happened Alan Williams, but it had a definite effect. 'Flus has contended with the "anti-defensive coach-to HC" crowd (might be easier to say "pro-offense HC advocates") but once he took control of the defense, many in the city were impressed. his hand is clearly evident in the turnaround there. Still, I hope Washington earns 'Flus' trust and he can go back to his experiment while handing down his scheme.
Poles... I don't know. You know, he's impressed the hell out of everyone, or so you read. But just as often, you read about his second-guessing and having to be talked out of expending draft capital because of his uncertainty. What happens when Cunningham gets snagged - it's going to happen. Whose the voice of reason, then? Will Poles have learned to trust those instincts he's supposed to have? And why is it a former offensive lineman can't seem to get it right with that unit?
Roster? I think Bagent has more and needs to be kept. WR Corp is fat, even with just DJM and RO. Allen can walk next season. Would be nice to have a franchise RB but I'm fine with RBBCs. Kmet was a great pick. He'll never be a Gonzalez or even a Gronk, but he's going to have a legacy in Chicago. O-Line; if Teven miraculously becomes healthy, that's a stand-out pick/conversion.
Defensive: Great trade for Sweat. Rest of the unit needs forging. LBs are set. DBs are set. STeamers are set.
Overall, I'm good with both Eberflus and Poles (while holding my right of reservation). Roster has definitely improved.

Now let's see what Shane Waldron can do.
That's a good synopsis of where the team is at. Regarding Poles and Eberflus, I figure that they were both rookies at their respective positions and both had some rookie bumps in the road the first two seasons. I'll say one thing, Poles had real guts to nuke the roster like he did - rather than duct tape it like past GMs have done (perpetuating the mediocre seasons I grew so tired of). Looking back now, it was quite a thing to survive when the nuclear option was taken with the roster and we had two "green as gourds" guys leading the team. But so far, Poles and Eberflus seem to be growing into their roles. They are not "there" yet but they seem to be developing well so far. The roster we have right now, is better than any I can remember in recent years. Young ascending talent. A QB who looks like he could end up being elite. And even the depth seems better than usual.
My standard for them is still Super Bowl ready by 2025. I am not satisfied to be the next Cowboys. Not enough to be better — must be better than Packers and Lions. The jury is still out in my book on that.
Poles has been like most successful GMs IMO. He's made a few bad moves, made a few good moves and didn't waste high draft picks being the smartest person in the room (I don't consider a 3rd a high draft pick---but the VJJ pick was still crazy.) Until they win year in and year out, he's got stuff to prove. Arrow pointing up.
Flus cost the Bears at least 3+ games with in game coaching decision and blew the start of the season with his team being unprepared. His OC and DC were failures. IMO he's going to be the weak link. If he can break out of his "coach not to lose" mentality and move into a "let's go win this game" mindset I'll upgrade my opinion. As much as I hate to admit it, LaFleur in GB has a "let's go win this game" mindset. 3-8 and he's going down field consistently. 3-8 to Flus in seasons past meant a bubble screen or a delayed shotgun run followed by a field position punt. If Flus changes, this team will win 10+ games.
Flus infuriated me with the way he sat his starters during last years PS and then opened up 0-4 with his team looking totally unprepared and outclassed.
I admit thus far he seems to have learned some lessons this PS but I want to see real games in September to be convinced we have turned the corner coaching-wise.
Both Poles and Eberflus have made some big mistakes the first two years. Both. They are no longer considered rookies as they enter this 3rd season. I agree we need to see the results on the field this year. But I do understand that Poles and Eberflus - both - will make some mistakes moving forward. The expectation will be that they make fewer, and that they are smaller mistakes - and they don't repeat mistakes. I think that is the reasonable expectation moving forward.
A lot of fans wanted Poles fired and Eberflus fired one year ago. Both. Actually, less than one year ago because it was mid-season. That is looking more and more "meatball-ish" to me now. But time will tell how it pans out in the end.
