Swifty updates us after today's practice. It sounds like Pryor and Bill Murray are looking pretty decent on the OL. Hope that continues.
LINK When the team returned to practice Saturday at Halas Hall, cornerback Kyler Gordon, guard Nate Davis, cornerback Tyrique Stevenson, defensive end Montez Sweat and nose tackle Andrew Billings remained out. Gordon and Davis have been out for more than a week. Right tackle Darnell Wright wasn’t spotted on the practice field. He was absent Wednesday as well. Safety Jaquan Brisker appeared limited. “Going to be hopeful that they're back here the next day and we have Monday off as well,” head coach Matt Eberflus said. “That's by design to be able to get guys back so we get to the thick of this training camp session where we're getting ready for Buffalo then Cincinnati joint practice then Cincinnati.” When asked about Wright specifically, Eberflus responded, “Like I said, we’re hopeful on a lot of guys.” The absences of Wright and Davis meant a new-look starting offensive line. Matt Pryor began at right tackle, next to Bill Murray at right guard. During another series, Larry Borom played right tackle and Pryor played right guard. “You also saw a little bit different depth chart on the O-line today. That's fine,” Eberflus said. “We're just working guys to see if they can elevate with those groups.” Eberflus said they’ll start having some second- and third-team players go up against the starters to “see if they can rise as we go because we never put ceilings on players.”
Sweat out today too (but it does not sound serious).

So what’s going on with the rookie, Ameg***? Is he still too injured to practice? This would be a great time to see what he can do at RT or RG.
It is so unfortunate. He and Claypool are the biggest mistakes of Ryan Poles tenure here so far. Signing Davis hurt this team. He has yet to perform up to his contract when he HAS been healthy. And he really seems checked-out on the NFL. I question if he even want to play now... just collect the paycheck. Dude has shown nothing since being signed here. We could have invested that money in a G who actually, you know, can (and wants to) play at a high level. Might as well have flushed that $30-million in contract dollars down the Halas Hall toilet.
The Davis signing is looking more and more like Poles' worst acquisition. Unlike Claypool, we are stuck with him for another season.
Guy got paid and ever since has had an endless string of excuses why he can't play or practice. He reminds me of Alshon Jeffery that last year when he malingered an entire season and was a total pussy.
Larger picture isn't looking good on the OL and its really getting concerning. Jenkins is made of glass too. Kiran whatever his name is can't practice either*. Now Darnell Wright is banged up too. I think we are getting close to the point where the Bears have to make a decision and stick to it to start the season:
If Connor Williams is ready or nearly ready, yeah you need to bite the bullet and sign him. Move Bates to RG which is his best position anyway and Davis/Shelton can be your iOL backups. If CW isn't healthy yet (and the fact that no one has signed him yet suggests he isn't), then I think its close to time to anoint Shelton as the #1 C and Bates as the #1 RG. Davis and Bill Murray or Kramer can be backups.
It isn't ideal but this constant shifting of Cs and Gs can't be good for getting Caleb the comfort and continuity he needs. The RS starts in a little over a month.
We are close to the point where you gotta start locking these things down and Davis has shown himself to be utterly unreliable. Frankly I'd fed up enough to cut him at this point except his dead cap hit is too high.
*BTW, wtf is Ryan Poles problem with 3rd round picks? Velus was not a good pick and lots of people said so at the time (age, no hands). Kiran was another strange choice as well. A small school, already-injured OL in the 3rd round? That seems like more of a 5th or 6th round type of pick to me. He looks like he's heading to an injury redshirt year which is not good value for the high 3rd round.
Man, we all loved Day 1 -- nailed it there -- but the rest of the draft this year left me scratching my head. A punter in the 4th? I don't get it.

The sad thing is that I can't image being able to trade ND either. What team would take on his remaining contract if the guy doesn't want to play? And his cap hit this year is the same if we cut him or keep him. So he is probably here this year no matter what. He's not even backup material if you can't count on him (and we can't). Dude is a big liability. Frustrating.
With Wright out with injury, and Teven Jenkins and Nate Davis both out today nursing injuries, there is serious talk about Caleb not being able to play against Buffalo - due to not being able to protect him with the remaining OL woes.

He's untradeable this season. Bears are stuck with him. No one is giving you a ham sandwich for this guy with his current contract.
It's another example of how FA is so often fools gold. We fans always want our GM to sign so-and-so every March. A large proportion of these signings don't work out well.
I think we are near the point where you have to write him off and bench him. Maybe he gets one more week to get his ass in gear and practice regularly before being downgraded to "expensive #2".
