As I'm sitting around today doing minor house projects before school starts, the game didn't really tell us a lot. Depth across the board (specifically DL, Safties, and OL) showed why they are depth pieces. No one stood out as "Wow, why isn't [insert name here] playing more?" Johnson was a surprise, maybe he's figured it out after 4 years in the league? Either way even if he keeps this up and plays out the rest of the PS he's not better than WR4 with a chance for more playing time NEXT season if Allen is a one year rental.
Listening to Tory and his booth buddy slobber over the backup QBs was pretty funny. I heard a HC say one time that he didn't want a proven vet as his backup QB, he wanted a Kurt Warner (backup to Tony Banks in 98 and then MVP in 99.) The gushing over Mills, Keenum and Rypien was over the top.
Scott had a solid camp last year, was trumpeted as Mooney's future replacement and then.....nothing. Hope he's not a PS warrior amd then a season no-show.
I am of the same mindset here. I did not expect Rypien to look as good as he did, and Johnson really impressed me
I rewatched some of those Rypien passes and they do lack zip. He's thrown more ints than TDs in his career. I suspect against #1's those passes may not have been completions, or worse, ints. He looked good last night for sure. But he looks to me like he has a bit of a noodle-arm. But then again he's a #3 backup and that's what you get. I did like how he took command of the offense. He looks like a football-smart guy for sure. He made good decisions with the ball all night.
Wow, I didn't see that at all. Not saying he has a great arm by any means but I thought he had pretty good zip for a backup. I also really liked the early look at Waldron's offense. We actually attacked the middle of the field! Very preliminary but encouraging.
Speaking of new things, did you guys notice a couple of plays where Rypien had some pressure but stepped up fluidly in the pocket, kept his eyes downfield, and ripped a good throw 20 yards over the middle on target?
In the 7 seasons we all watched Mitch Trubisky and Justin Fields, how often did we see either of them do that? I can only recall a couple times even including preseason games. I'm sure they both did it, but it sure as hell wasn't as often as it should have been. Both of them struggled with pocket awareness and keeping their eyes downfield.
It's a minor point here cuz Rypien isn't important but it kinda illustrates how bad our QBs have been. I was watching CHGO last week and one of the superchat questions they answered was what looked different QB-wise in this camp compared to Trub & Fields camps. And they said essentially that "Caleb is simply way better". They also talked about how in prior camps they had to delicately report on the QB cuz the fans were so optimistic and hopeful that they didn't want to hear anything negative. Basically, CHGO said that both of them struggled and sucked in camp but no one wanted to hear it so they had to be subtle.

This is interesting. I agree with you MP. I thought he looked good. Now, whether or not he could do that to a #1 defense is definitely a point of discussion, but I didn't see any issues. I didn't see slow passes, but didn't see any rifle throws either. To me, the point is to move the ball and score. If you carry on your nose to do it, that's fine with me. He got it done.
The interesting thing is that I thought he was better than Bagent. And I like Bagent and don't like Rypien. But I may have to reassess that. I think Bagent desrves to make the team and would be picked up in an instant on the practice squad. But if Rypien can play like that against a #1 defense, you have to keep him. Problem is..... I don't think there is room for 3 QBs

My initial reaction to Rypien last night was just that... and probably overly critical. Rypien played a really solid game. He looks like a football-smart guy who knows how to play within his physical limitations. He probably has plenty of arm to be a good NFL backup. My comment was nitpicking and maybe not even accurate. It will be interesting to see if Bagent can look as good or better as the preseason progresses. And maybe Rypien will be the better of the two... who knows at this stage, right? I think the good thing in this is that we should have a backup this season who can win some games (even as a rookie from D2 ball, Bagent was .500 as a starter here). I'm convinced the backup QB can make or break a season in some cases if you're a playoff team who needs the guy to come in for a handful of games until your QB1 can come back. If Caleb goes down for a few games and the QB2 can get a couple of wins (very possible with THIS particular loaded offense) then CW comes back and we keep on track for the playoffs. LOL, one can hope, anyway :-)

I agree with your entire post. And he may be better than Bagent. It's too early to really tell I think, one way or the other (for us fans). Someone today said Rypien knows the Waldron offense and could throw with anticipation and throw guys open - and he had more reps than Bagent in this game too. It will be fun to watch the competition unfold over the rest of camp and the 3 preseason games. Frankly, I think the best thing about the situation is that our backup QB should be very decent, no matter which one of these guys wins the QB2 battle. It's a good problem to have two good guys here.

I'm not trying to say Rypien is anything but a preseason backup hero. He will be the #3 QB and probably on the PS.
But he did look really good and very decisive. Kind of how Bagent looked last year in PS. It was against backups true but it was also WITH backups. Bears actually have some depth at QB though we all hope neither of them are needed this year.
Anyway, it was just good to see the Bears pass offense actually look competent for once, especially over the middle. I wanna see that continue in the next two PS games with CW out there.
What I DON'T want to see is a repeat of last year where Justin Fields threw 3 screen passes for a total of 1 air yard combined the whole PS. That was ridiculous and it showed in week 1 when the offense looked completely unprepared and outclassed.
This video made me take note of Booker. Granted this was against 3rd and 4th stringers but this is how a top tier pass rusher should look against them.
