I have said it before and will say it again. I believe the league will be going to a system where a team is allowed one contract to NOT be included in the cap total. A star allowance if you will. Of course there will have to be some sort of cap for that as well but at least it gives teams a chance to compete without having to sink the cap into 3 players.
I didn't say that this would be a QB pay thing. It could be anyone player. You have a rookie QB well then you pay the big bucks for a rusher. The owner or GM's would have to be smart and plan on who to use it on. Most likely ya it will be used on a player but after a rookie contract is over it could be fun to see what happens next.

There would still be a bidding war for the top QB, and that inflates the QB pay scale through the roof for the next one. It would be even worse than today.
Swiftly just posted a YT video on this. Same basic idea as I proposed. He would be happy if NFL had rule that no QB contract can be more than $40 million per year.

The problem with that is the fact that so many contracts already exceed that $40mil/yr now. At the heart of this is the cap does discipline owners who overspend on any player (usually the QB position) because it takes money off the table for that team to build out their roster with the talent to win. They can still win, but the margin of error for those GMs as they build the rest of their team is mighty slim. Mahomes got his 10-year $450-million dollar deal, and yet the team was in 3 of the next 4 Super Bowls (winning two Super Bowls). So it can be done. But not with 2nd tier QBs. I doubt Cousins is going to get anything done in Atlanta. I don't think the Jags are going anywhere with Trevor Lawrence. For that matter, I'm hearing that Jordan Love will be getting $60mil/year (beginning 2025) and I'm all in on that... he is not worth it and that will suck the juice out of the talent roster in Green Bay for years. A truly elite QB is one thing (Mahomes) but guys like Goff, Cousins & T.Law? Nah. That is a self inflicted wound that will kill their team. Let 'em do that.
We have 5 years of Caleb Williams at a discount rate. We can tag him 2 additional years if we have to. And I don't think we will have to, because I believe he truly will be elite and be able to carry a team like Mahomes. I don't mind paying him that kind of money. And I do believe Poles is installing the player talent eval infrastructure (with recent upgrades, promotions and hires this year) that can sustain winning through the draft. I feel pretty confident of that. We are very early on in the Poles tenure track. Now that the QB is in place I think it will be easier for him to draft now as we move forward. Getting an elite QB1 is like finding a unicorn. He got his unicorn.

The $40m would apply to future contracts. Can’t legally void an existing contract.. At the current rate, even the franchise tag will be very expensive in 4 years.
Keep the koolaid on the shelf until we see some actual results on the field.
That doesn't exist already? Can I introduce you to the Atlanta Falcons and their tampering to get Cousins. Can I then introduce you to the Tampa Bay Bucs and their tampering to get Brady.
I know all that. I’m talking about allowing no limits to how high the bidding can go. The salary cap at least puts a limit so they can’t (yet) offer a $500 million contract. But wait 4 years when Williams goes on the market.
Mahomes contract was for $450 mill...might as well have been $500 mill. It was over 10 years of course...but the we're there already dude.
I still don't understand why the Jags did what they did. Like the Bears would have if they kept Fields, they have T-Laws 5th year option and then 2 franchise tag years if they wanted. Thats 3 years of control after this year. He's been mediocre so far...why give him all that money before he proves he's worth it?
Because in three years the cost will be 75% more. They obviously think he is — or will be — good enough to lead them to the Promised Land.
Helluva bet. Giants thought that and made that bet on Daniel Jones...hasn't worked out so well.

It won’t be $500m for 10 years, it will be for 4 or 5.
This is why I keep saying you take advantage of Williams cheap contract. Load the team for year 2-3 with as much talent you can afford. This is a golden chance if he's the real deal.
Supply and demand, first lesson in economics. Mahomes should fire his agent for letting him sign a 10 year contract.
Mahomes can easily get that money back from sponsors and commercials. Just like Tom Brady. He knows that if you take too much from the cap it will hurt the rest of the team.
Everyone thought the Patriots dynasty could never be match. With the way Mahomes and the Chiefs are playing. Expect it to be match soon.
