Remember back in 2020 when Patrick Mahomes signed (what we thought then) was a staggering contract? That's now the going rate for QBs now. Trevor with a $275-million dollar contract. Making $10mil/yr more than Patrick Mahomes. Estimates for Jordan Love contract are at $60-million dollars a year now. These are contracts with no-trade clauses and mostly guaranteed money.
We can see the benefit of not having to pay Justin Fields and re-setting the QB cost with Caleb. Even the 2nd tier QBs are getting paid big money now. Goff with a $212-million dollars. Kurt Cousins at $45mil/year now... what Mahomes signed just 4 years ago.
Makes ya wonder where this will end. Swift talks about the madness here:
Supply and demand, first lesson in economics. Mahomes should fire his agent for letting him sign a 10 year contract.
It goes back to the fact that NFL owners are billionaires who can pay whatever they want. I calculated that it increased 63% the last 4 years. If the trajectory continues Williams will cost $500 million in 4 years. The NFL is also partly responsible in how much they raise the salary cap each year.

When the NFL decided to move emphasis from another aspects of the game to the OFF (scoring points) AND NFL offenses became more and more complex, the QB position became "THE MOST IMPORTANT POSITION" on the field.
The number of players who can run the complex offenses well, make the throws, etc will be highly paid. No other position in sports anywhere can match it.
The NFL (ie the owners) have to figure out a way to develop more QBs. Its actually in the best interests of the NFLPA as well to tweak the rules allowing QBs (or even just rookies or players with less than say 32 starts [pick a number its really not the point]) to have contact with HC/OC/QB-coaches in the offseason, allowing them to learn offenses, etc.

At the time (2020) it seemed like a fantastic contract to me. But in 2024 it's a good value contract for the Chiefs. But you're right, why sign a 10yr contract? But it does drive home the point that the Bears' resetting their QB1 contract to a rookie deal this year is probably a great move. I was all about keeping Fields at the time. But if the Bears had kept him they'd be looking at having to give him one of these contracts. Instead there's cap money to build around the QB now. And I can understand why the Bears are not sitting Caleb, and instead starting him game-1. First of all he seems like a guy who will do just fine starting right away. And 2nd of all, that rookie contract is ticking away like sands through an hour glass now. Gotta maximize that time.

I have said it before and will say it again. I believe the league will be going to a system where a team is allowed one contract to NOT be included in the cap total. A star allowance if you will. Of course there will have to be some sort of cap for that as well but at least it gives teams a chance to compete without having to sink the cap into 3 players.

I hate that idea. It would turn the NFL into something closer to the NBA. There would every year be a bidding war between billionaires for the best QB on the market.

I know. I like keeping everything under a cap because the Bears are not owned by a cash-rich owner like others in the league. If that cap-free thing ever happens I think we would never see the Bears be competitive again. The rich would just buy the best QBs and that would give them an advantage. We would not be keeping Caleb then... someone like Jerry Jones would "buy" him.

It would also inflate the price of the franchise tag.
The QB position is so critical, I’d like to go the opposite direction — a roster cap PLUS a separate cap on the QB position. This would allow all teams to keep their QB1 without financially wrecking the team.

Yesterday I was thinking about it and one positive is that if a team chooses to overpay the QB then that is a self-inflicted wound. Every team has the same cap to manage their roster. You can't buy a championship very easily if you cripple the rest of your roster to get a QB. However, a skilled GM could probably pay top dollar and still put together a great team.
Trevor's contract is going to take up ~20-percent of their cap ($55mil of a $255.4mil cap). That still leaves 80% to work with. Adding a few other upper-tier contracts will still be doable - und then you go with value signings as much as possible. But to make it all work, the team needs coaching staff that can truly develop young project-talent players. And even more critically important will be the need to have a GM & scouting department that's skilled enough to make almost every draft pick count. No trading away draft picks for "buying" many FA vets at full-retail prices - because that is simply not sustainable.
A championship team will live or die by the draft (gotta have that constant fresh inflow of solid talent on cheap rookie contracts). Think about it. Rookie deals last at least 4 seasons, and teams get 7 picks per year... plus, if you truly work this model you will get some very helpful compensatory picks (the Patriots would get up to 10 overall draft picks some years). So, over a 4 year period a GM will have somewhere between 30 and say, ~35 to 37 picks (depending upon comp picks and trades of some older players... Belichick was so skilled at that when Brady was there). That is significant if the GM can draft well and the coaches can develop those mid to late round guys at a decent rate (keep in mind that over half your roster is made up of backups).
I 100% believe that the importance of the draft picks will become pure gold in the hands of a great GM/coaching staff. It's the only way I can see to sustain winning while paying so much of your cap to keep a guy like Caleb Williams.
