I wouldn't say I'm surprised but it doesn't mean I think it's right. Just because they are bad overall doesn't mean they don't have some very good players.
And yet some keep thinkin we haven't descended to that level yet. LOL
And some act like this team has great talent. No. We have a number of young guys who show the promise of possibly being All-Pro talent, in the future. But right now we are not there.
And one factor has been the injuries. We lead the entire NFL with our 19 guys on IR. We've had a boatload of serious injuries - in addition to - the IR guys. Pace has made over 150 player-roster moves so far this season trying to compensate and patch the roster. It's just been a killer season for sure.
Ryan Pace has had 2 drafts so far. I believe the players taken in those first two drafts will be pretty solid next season when they have at least some NFL experience under their belt. I could see one or more being in the Pro-Bowl. Then, I'm looking forward to this 3rd Ryan Pace draft and free agency. By next fall, with the key players healthy again, we should have a decent roster talent-wise. Obviously, Pace has his work cut out for him at QB. But that's why he makes the big bucks as an NFL GM.
So far, I do like the job Pace has done personnel-wise. He's made some mistakes, but for a young/new GM, he has made a number of good moves too. I'll bet his guys do start showing up in the Pro-Bowl and some will end up as sound foundation pieces for years to come.

Our backups have done a remarkable job as starters overall. I credit Pace for some of that, and Fox and the coaching staff for some of that. We have witnessed a number of young players improve game to game this year. I remember years we couldn't develop players worth crap. That has changed. Part of that is definitely Pace bringing in kids who DO have higher ceiling potential. But gotta give coaching some credit for that too.
Just a follow-up to my previous post. The coaching of the offensive line and the backup quarterbacks has been nothing short of remarkable. We lost Kyle Long, Grasu & our LT is a 7th round pick. Massie looked like a total piece of crap early in the season. Whitehair, a LT in college is switched to guard in training camp - then at the zero-hour is make our starting center.
Whomever is responsible for coaching up this OL must be incredible. This is chicken salad made out of chicken shit for sure. Great coaching job.
Then, how about the job done with the backup QB's? Barkley was watching the NFL games on his TV in September. We sign him off the street. And now he is our starting QB. For a 4th string QB (or 5th, I lost count over the course of the season on QB's) he is doing a decent job. Kudos to the coach responsible for this. Kudos to Pace and the scouting staff for finding and signing Barkley off the street like this.
And how about Vic Fangio? The D got gutted with injuries also, but the D is currently ranked a top-10 defense in yards allowed (LINK).
I think these coaches are coaching their ass off this year. But some fans will just point to the W/L record and want a new coaching staff.
