brasilbear posted this in the offseason threat, but it is so good that it belongs in a sticky thread here for awhile. I'm dying to know what your reactions were to it. I'll share mine here. It makes you realize how bad the mis-information is on the Internet (regarding the evil Caleb narrative that was all over the Internet before the draft).
The 2nd thing that stood out to me was the level of the Bears infrastructure for evaluating talent seems to be incredibly impressive. davidl - this is my point when we talk about luck happening. Great GMs in any pro sport make their own luck to some extent. They position their team for luck to happen. No question the Bears have had their share of good and bad luck in recent years. I totally understand there is luck involved. But we do have an incredibly special GM here now. No, he won't be perfect. Yes, he will make mistakes (even the great ones are not perfect GMs) but this guy is impressive... and this thing is only beginning. He is building a team that can sustain success, winning a lot over many years.

I guess everyone who buys a lottery ticket is “making their own luck” if they happen to win. They put themselves in position to win. I also guess we could equally say the Texans GM made his own luck, but his luck ran out the last game of the season. I don’t know what Poles would have produced without the two #1 picks, but we sure as hell wouldn’t be here, and those picks are the results of incredible luck, not skill, and that’s not to mention getting lucky that Williams came into the draft in 2024 rather than 2023.
I think history will prove that missing on Jalen Carter will be his worst mistake, although CJ Stroud may be in the running if he wins a Super Bowl and Poles does not.

Yesterday I listened to a former scout talk about how he liked Gervon Dexter's play in the last games of the season over Jalen Carter's play. He said Carter actually regressed a bit as the season went on, while Dexter was improving. He said Dexter was having to learn a completely new role in this particular defense and will be a stud for the Bears.
I do believe Caleb Williams ceiling is significantly higher than Stroud. If they were both available in the draft and I was going to draft one of the two - it wouldn't even be close, I'm drafting Caleb Williams.
Following your line of thinking with GM's and "luck" why even have a scouting department or a GM in any pro sport? Just wait for "luck" to happen, right? LOL.

To take one example, the scouting department put Williams at top of the draft board, but lucky he was there and lucky to land #1 two years in a row.
LINK Bears war room reaction to drafting Rome Odunze is absolutely iconic One person's reaction, in particular, sent the fanbase into a frenzy.
Right after the Bears selected Odunze with the ninth pick, Bears assistant general manager walked up to general manager Ryan Poles and dropped an absolute bombshell: "[We got our] number one and number two player though," Cunningham said.
In that episode, Poles was visibly shocked after the Odunze pick, because the Bears didn't have to trade up to get him. "Can't believe it ... I can't believe it ... the perfect day ... we didn't have to give up anything," Poles said aloud after the selection was made. Now, Williams and Odunze still have to prove it on the field. There is a long way to go....
