I've gotta see this guy. I'd never heard of him before we drafted him. But I was surprised to hear so many people saying he is some mystic great punter. Supposedly the best punter stats since 2012 (not quite sure what that is about). So we have a generational punter as well as a generational franchise QB.
On a serious note. Iiked how Adam Hoge framed this pick. He says in this video something like: I don't know if you spend a 4th round pick on a punter. But if you did, then this is the guy you spend it on. Maybe that's a good way to look at it. Regardless, he is a quality Day-1 starter (Hoge says he will be top-5 in the NFL his rookie season). Anyway, here is the video. It's funny.
That should translate to approx 0.0432734 more wins next year.
I was surprised though. There was data posted by some last night by NFL pundits that pointed to how it does contribute (at times) to wins (sounds crazy, I know... If I find one of those articles or YouTubes I'll post it here).
Apparently that is exactly what this kid did for Iowa. There were games that were won because of him.
I had no clue. I don't follow Iowa at all. But apparently this kid is a technician. They compare his ball placement with his kicks to be like a skilled pro golfer placing their ball where they want it. Absolute precision. To help win games.
No question, a 4th round pick for a punter seems crazy. I agree. But like Hogue said, if you were to spend a 4th on a punter, then this is the guy to do that on. The comps for Tory are to Ray Guy. A punter who was a 1st round pick (LOL, that's not a typo), whom I remember VERY well from the 1970's. Three time Super Bowl winner. He played forever for the team that drafted him in the 1st round. Dude was always in the Pro Bowl.
He is in the Hall of Fame.
If this kid is truly as good as Ray Guy, then yes, he will actually win games for us. You could certainly do worse with a 4th round pick than spending it on a guy like that. This is not your typical JAG here that you pick up as an UDFA. Day-1 starter too. I can't get too upset over the pick. And take it in the context of this years crappy talent by the time the 4th round came.
I think of it like this... with this years lack of talent we could have probably rolled the dice on a "project" DL guy or whatever (the remaining D talent at that point THIS year was weak sauce for sure). Or. We could get a Day-1 starter who will probably be here for 10 or more years helping us to win games. I can't get too upset with the move when I frame it that way. LOL, and now I'm chomping at the bit to watch this "generational punter guy"

I would much rather spend 4th rd on a starting punter than on a rotational S. Or 5th DE. Or training squad OT/OG. We have those. We also had one of the worst NFL punters. Hoping its other way around now.

Spin it any way you want JABF but we could have traded down, gotten an extra pick and still gotten him. It’s not about whether or not we should have picked him but whether or not picking him there was the best thing to do. But I’ll stick to what I said before. The last two picks for us were a bonus we got who we wanted and needed with the first two

Two thoughts on that... and I'll preface them with saying you could be completely correct, and I'm not saying I'm right about any of this. I just figure we don't KNOW he would still be there. If this guy is really at the level people are saying (Ray Guy level) then he may or may not have been available later. That 4th pick in THIS particular draft wasn't worth that much anyway - consequently - if you see a generational talent, a Day-1 starter, there - then I'd take him there. Now this is all conjecture... because I admit I've never seen this guy play. Maybe he won't be that good. You never know. But if he truly is that level of talent then (like Ray Guy) that's a player you want... Ray helped that Raider team to 3 Super Bowl wins. He used to look amazing to me - there is a reason he's in the Hall of Fame. Dude was a weapon. And that is what I'm hearing over and over again about this Tory Taylor. I keep hearing people describe him as a weapon. If we want to ever win another Super Bowl, then we can use all the weapons we can get - even a lowly punter matters I think.

Absolutely true. We don't know if he would still be there. But he is a punter. I am playing the odds by saying he would have been. Plus, you don't have to move way down to get a 6th or 7th.
I do not believe that a 4th in this draft is not worth much. It is worth as much as in any other draft. There are good players and not good players in any draft in any round. Someone, or some bunch of people decided by their own "expert" evaluation that the lower rounds in this draft did not have any value and it took on a life of it's own. The magic of social media.
But in the end, we both agree. (and even if we don't, what's the difference?). It really does not affect much that we picked him there. At most, we lost another good prospect lower in the draft. Maybe we don't have to give up as much to take that last pick because we have a lower pick to add. But does it materially change change anything? I don't think so

All good points. I'm not claiming I know anything. And hey, if the biggest quibble about this draft is this, then I figure we had a good draft. Just that first round alone made it a winner year for me anyway. But it's fun to debate these moves like the punter thing. LOL, now watch the guy go out and start shanking kicks left and right and we end up with a UDFA - that would be a "Bears thing" for sure
