I factor in that this is a very poor year for draft talent. The talent dropped like a rock after the 2nd round this year. By the time the Bears were drafting in the 4th round it was clearly dumpster-diving for JAGS at the regular O and D positions. Cupboard was pretty bare. So why not get a P this year - considering it's not a typical year and the UDFA's are going to be at this 4th round level.
Considering all that, hey, why not dump our pitiful punter and get a stud there?
And as one NFL guy said, this does help the team - even Caleb and the offense when you can flip the field pinning the opposing team back deep in their own territory all season long.
Yeah, the fact that this years 4th round is probably equivalent to most draft's 6th is the only thing that makes me not dislike this pick.
Gill sucks and needed an upgrade, I agree, but I wouldn't burn anything above a 7th on a punter. You can sign vets off the street or UDFAs any day you want to compete with Gill. I am not a fan of this pick based almost purely on positional value. I would have rather taken a flyer on almost anything else--LB, RB, TE, DL, even S.
I give Poles a "D" for this one.
Thats my opinion exactly. Look, the punter might turn out to be an above average field flipper. Thats a good thing. But...rather have taken a flyer on a LB, RB, receiving TE, DT, DB.
With trade and draft of Booker I'm feeling better.
Rich Eisen was ecstatic about this pick. Just in awe with Poles and his choosing.
That's great. And if this guy wins the job and goes on to be a very good punter, the impact will still be MODEST.
The difference in impact between an average NFL punter and an above-average one is SMALL.
Ok, I understand that. And somehow I believe Poles understands it too. And still pulled the plug, as he sees him as a massive improvement. Gill was bad last year especially.
Would u feel a tad better if we got Booker in 4th and then punter in 5th?

Hey I'm not out on a ledge over this--its admittedly a minor point. I'm ok with an "average" punter and you can get those guys anywhere w/o using a draft pick. I do like the Booker choice but it cost next years 4th to do it.
It's not a big deal but yeah I wouldn't even be spending a 4th on a punter unless maybe he was a converted QB and was really good at punt fakes. Johnny Hekker has been one of the best at that recently and he was a UDFA.
ya there's just no reason to ever draft a punter, at least not until the 6th/7th rounds(MegaPunt). But honestly w/a day 3 pick I'm not that worried about it. I'm not going to fret.
I do like that they added this Edge kid though, even if it did cost a future pick.

Maybe I'm dating myself here but....DANNY WHITE from the late 70s to early 80s was the backup QB, holder on field goals AND the punter.
