Just so I understand, when they talk about the stadium on lakefront - are they talking about completely renovating Soldier Field and putting a roof on it or are they going to build a brand new dome from scratch next so SF?
Because if it's the latter, I honestly don't know where they would build it. Is there really enough space? Creating space where the Waldron Deck parking garage is currently located is definitely not enough.
This is gonna be interesting.
They are talking about nuking the existing stadium to the ground. This isn't a dome version of the flying saucer add-on.
They are going to contribute $2B to it. For a building they don't own. I just don't get it
+1 There is no way this adds up to reality. Think about it. The present mayor seems to be different than the last. So now there is a good vibe between the McCaskeys and Brandon Johnson that wasn't there with former mayor Lightfoot. The winds of Chicago politics change. Do you pay $2-billion dollars for the rental on the Lakefront? What if the Park District starts delivering poor service (again) and the stadium isn't such a nice venue?
That $2-billion would be 1/3rd of the entire value of the Chicago Bears' present value ($6.3 billion). All of this just does not add up. Why would the family want to do this when you can own what looks like a real money-maker property development in Arlington Heights?
Why would the McCaskey Family do this? I'm like you, BIH, I just don't get it. Unless. Unless the family is going to sell quickly to make a quick buck when Virginia passes (has to be soon with her age). Maybe the huge scope of the AH development is not what they want to take on because the team will belong to a new owner sooner rather than later. And I'm not saying the Lakefront thing won't be a huge undertaking too. But maybe a smaller bite of the apple for the Family than developing something as huge as that large AH business campus.

Seeing how they mishandle the franchise since they took over. They couldn't properly do a Jerry world for the Chicago Bears.
Once Virginia passes. I see them selling the team.

I forget who it was, but someone was CERTAIN they would go with AH. One of those "for sure" opinions. Just because it makes sense doesn't mean that's what will happen. Almost everything in life is a "we'll see". You just don't know until it happens. This was what they said was going to happen from the articles I read, but I didn't think it really would go this direction in the end. But again, until they actually break ground somewhere, it's not really decided. Local residents have a pretty strong group against it and they have to agree on taxpayer participation. It's still a we'll see, but it sure does look like AH is a goner. Stupid goobers there messed up an almost sure deal. And honestly, I don't agree with Warren on this. But I don't have all the data. On the other hand, there would have to be some significant data that I don't know to change my mind. Honestly, it just seems to me that Warren just has a personal preference for the city of Chicago.
I just saw this in the Chicago Tribune. I think the Bears and the City over-estimate the willingness of taxpayers to take on this extra tax burden in this present economic climate. I could see some serious backlash here. JMO.
LINK Taxpayers would pick up half the tab for Bears’ lakefront stadium, sources say The Chicago Bears are set to announce a $4.6 billion plan to build a new enclosed stadium and improved lakefront area with half of the money coming from taxpayers, sources said. But the team will have to overcome serious skepticism from several directions.
The stadium itself would cost $3.2 billion to build, with another $1.4 billion in proposed infrastructure improvements, according to sources familiar with the plan who spoke to the Tribune on the condition of anonymity.
The sources said the Bears plan to pledge $2.3 billion, which includes some financing through the NFL. But the Bears’ plan includes an additional $2.3 billion in public financing, along with refinancing outstanding debt for prior publicly financed stadium projects for the Bears and White Sox, according to the sources.
Taxpayers would be on the hook for the proposed infrastructure improvements along with about $1 billion in new borrowing to finance the new stadium south of Soldier Field, the sources said.

I have no idea as to what will eventually happen. And like everyone else says in this thread, it doesn't make much sense. So, we need to wait this out a bit and see what actually happens.
