I know we won't see what the other 31 teams have in store for us for 4 days. But I personally think that we could easily have 3 or 4 QBs taken and all of the top 3 WRs taken in the first 7 or 8 picks. This woudl push Alt all the way down to the 9th pick.
He could legitimately the BPA at #9.
+1 There are two ways to look at this #9 pick. One (as you point out) could end up being OL being the best player available at that pick if Alt would slide that far to us. The other thing to consider for this draft (not just at #9 but for the remaining picks after Caleb Williams) is need. We don't know how the Bears view the existing offensive line on our roster. Maybe it is good with good depth right now. But if the offensive line is not solid then they need a strategy for getting it to that level for the rookie QB1. Maybe they do the trade-down and use that to get a guy they like. Or, maybe they flat use that #9 to get an OL. Or maybe they have their eye on a guy to sign (a veteran) after the draft. I just hope they go into this season with a very good offensive line with very good depth for WHEN injuries happen. OL drop like flies to injuries in the modern NFL - and that has also been our problem on the Bears team. Decent quality depth is so critically important to have. This is Ryan Poles' 3rd season here, so the OL should be at a very very decent level (including quality depth) for this 2024 season. And again, maybe it's fixed. Maybe I'm worrying about a non-issue. We will know when the regular season games are played.

This! I don't consider this a non-issue. Personally, I view our OL as being a solid, decent OL. If and only if everyone stays healthy. And you have to ask yourself, when has that ever happened? I look at our OL as being very fragile. What happens when Jenkins goes down for 3 games? Or one of our other starters. I agree with you that, in the NFL, it is not a quesiton of "if it happens", just a question of "when it happens".
The following assumes the scenario where we get Alt (or maybe even Fashanu, if Poles loves him) at #9. Whatever, I mean Poles gets his long term bookends at OT. We could have the nucleus of a very productive and solid OL for many years to come. I wold prefer we keep Jones as a high quality swing OT. That would give us some real depth on the OL.
I believe we still have our first round pick and have 2 2nd round picks in 2025. If we resign Ngakwe for one more year (or do a similar short term veteran acquisition), I think we can still have a very high functioning defensive front 7 this year. Admittedly not a long term solution. But with our first and second rounders we could use all three to get an edge rusher to have similar bookends at DT and have enough draft capital to even get a decent OC as well. At that point we may have a similar depth on the DL and maybe a really solid OL with depth.
