Some Cautions for Chicago Bears Fans With High Expectations

Speaking of high expectations, Williams wants to play 20 years in Chicago and chase Bradys legacy. Hats off to him. But which newly drafted QB does not want to be the next Tom Brady? Easier said than done. That's a great mindset to have though.

For years now I have believed that one of the 3 main factors contributing to a quarterback's success is this belief they can do great things.  First, they have to have the physical skills necessary to succeed.  But every first round draft pick every year has the physical skills or they wouldn't be drafted that high, right?  Secondly, they have to have the mental CPU to process the game at the NFL level.  I figure you don't really know that until they play in real NFL games.  Third, the guy has to have that belief (confidence) that he can be great.  

This is one reason why it is so important for a young kid to come into a situation where he isn't subjected to getting the crap kicked out of him like Justin Fields had here.  Can a person overcome that and regain his confidence again?  Some can.  At least I think so.  But some can't.  And I am not talking about a rookie coming into a "perfect" situation.  Nobody gets perfect.  But there is a difference (I think anyway) between coming to a "bad team" versus coming to a team where you get physically beaten up on game days that first year - just getting physically abused and humiliated.  That's not something every kid can overcome.  I "get it" that many people don't believe you can "ruin" a kid permanently.  But I believe it.  And I will always believe it.  I am so hoping the offensive line this year is at least good enough that Caleb won't get "The Fields Treatment" that happened with Fields here.  We will see what happens.  But yeah, right now Caleb Williams has the talent and confidence to succeed.  The skill players are solid here now (finally).  Now let's see if Poles can put a solid OL out there this year.  Time will tell.

Oh, and this is why I won't have a hissy fit if Poles invests in OL instead of WR with that top pick this year.
