He has been in the NFL for 4 seasons so he is a veteran NFL player. Here are his career stats LINK. If you have PFF access, here's a LINK that drills down a bit more on his career stats. I get it, that he knows the Shane Waldron offense and may have some value there. But I don't think he has value as a veteran QB to mentor Caleb Williams. To be honest, I can't see how this guy still has a job in the NFL with those career stats. But he obviously has some value or he wouldn't have been signed by the Bears. I just don't understand why though.
You do understand why...you said it. "He knows the Shane Waldron offense". Thats it. He's the 3rd string QB...thats all the value he has to have, cause if him or any 3rd string QB for that matter, are in the game, we're screwed anyway!
No veteran QB that has any legit playing value was going to agree to come here without being grossly overpaid because they all know they're not going to play over the #1 pick.

Who? Run thought the FA QBs on spotrac and then run through team rosters to see who might get cut. Basically they are all Rypien clones, or Peterman clones or exhausted starters like Dalton.
Seems like we debate this every year and then no one is ever happy. Its like we think there is a QB out there who doesn't think he should/could be the starter, has lots of starting experience and is willing to sign for vet min to be a tutor for the #1 pick. Who is that guy?

I understand that part (third string QB is a third string QB... this is what you get). I don't have a problem with that. And I am thankful we have a young second year guy like Tyson Bagent on the roster who could develop further. That would be a fantastic asset to have, and I think he could develop into being a great backup for the team. It isn't a bad situation. But it does give me a greater appreciation for those young guys who happened to be drafted into situations where they could learn from watching a veteran - but I get it, that it is rare to have a situation like Mahomes had behind Alex Smith for most of a season, or the Green Bay QBs had for the transitions of Favre to Rodgers to Love. Or for that matter Tom Brady behind Drew Bledsoe for a season. I'm not suggesting CW sit a full season. I'm just saying those guys probably benefited to some extent having a veteran in the QB room. I was thinking someone like Josh McCown was in his latter years. But I get it. That is easier said than done.

He may know it, but from his record, he can't apply it so not sure how much mileage they will get from him

That's a great point. And also the coaches are here to coach. Today I went back and read the biographies on the O coaches and they sure seem to have good experience coaching (and playing) QB. It also looks like Waldron brought in a few coaches from Seattle where Geno Smith showed some good development in recent years. I'm just trying to sort it all out in my own mind as far as understanding (a bit anyway) what kind of environment Caleb will be landing in here. I'm not seeing any red flags. And it could be an excellent situation. Only time will tell.
