I'm comfortable with Bagent as the backup. No clue how Rypien is as a player. We had veterans here every time we brought in rookie QB1s and well that hasn't worked out well.
He has been in the NFL for 4 seasons so he is a veteran NFL player. Here are his career stats LINK. If you have PFF access, here's a LINK that drills down a bit more on his career stats. I get it, that he knows the Shane Waldron offense and may have some value there. But I don't think he has value as a veteran QB to mentor Caleb Williams. To be honest, I can't see how this guy still has a job in the NFL with those career stats. But he obviously has some value or he wouldn't have been signed by the Bears. I just don't understand why though.

His uncle seemed to have the Bears number. Maybe the nephew will reverse fortunes. I hope to never have to see him play in a meaningful game in a Bears uni. I imagine he's a good practice QB who has a high football IQ. If they got him for his ceiling I'd be worried.

Because he was cheap?
That's it, cheap and he already knows this offense. Rypien will earn a base salary of $1,125,000, while carrying a cap hit of $985,000. And he is zero threat to Caleb, like a better vet could possibly be viewed if Caleb struggles this year. I understand it's rare to have a situation like Mahomes had behind Alex Smith... and the Green Bay quarterbacks over the years. It seems like the Bears are going to have the coaching staff be the mentors for Caleb, and maybe that is 100% okay. Heck I don't know what to think about it all, as far as what is best and what is practical for the Bears' situation.
