I swear this is the same theme as last years draft. A reason why the Bears were going to wait until this years draft. Maybe next year?
Huh?
Last year had Will Anderson as top edge. There's no one like that this year.
Wow you guys dont remember!? Bears were NOT getting Will Anderson but depth at DE was not there according to predraft narrative. I dont know maybe Im mis-remembering?

Last year at this time we were talking about if Fields fails we were going to draft a QB. This is a great QB and WR draft class.
I see 3-4 QBs going top 10 and all 3 WR's going top 10.
You both have horrible memories on this. Bears needed a DE WAY more than they needed DTs but the value was at DT and Poles took 2 DTs despite having way more stability at DT than DE. (Yannick was a late signing) Narrative was wait til next year for a DE, am I crazy?? You were already on the JF1 stinks bandwagon and it was clouding your memory.

I'm not able to remember last week so, LOL, I'm not remembering last year for sure
But you bring up a good point. I don't think Poles is the kind of GM who will just "draft a guy" to check off a box on his grocery list. I think he is trying to get the best talent in a given draft at positions where that talent can also help our team. It's not necessarily pure "best player available" drafting. But it is BPA at a position where the team will be upgraded/helped. I'm thinking Poles is the kind of guy with a 3 year plan that factors into the equation the funding of the roster talent in that 3 year plan too. He is probably planning (as best you can) for not having to pay crazy money for the existing veterans whose contracts are coming up in those years. So the plan has to be in place now, for onboarding new guys (when you can) at those positions. And recently I was thinking about how crazy-complex this all is, in light of the fact you also need quality depth more than every now in the NFL. I read recently the data that stated 44% of all NFL starters miss games every single season now.
Anyway, I get it, that fans just want the shiny new toys - and that's it for them. What a good GM has to do is navigate each season with more thoughtful planning than that. It is infinitely more complex to execute a multi-year plan effectively with the finite resources available. It's a hybrid mix of draft and FAs and resigning your key guys already on your roster. Looking at Poles' moves so far, in light of all that, I'm pretty darned impressed. It really validates yesterday's article in "The Athletic" that graded Poles' moves this off-season (pre draft) as being the #2 team in the entire NFL this year.

It's a catch-22, isn't it. It's hard to find great edges out of the top-15 but does that mean you should reach for one in drafts where the talent pool isn't that great?
BTW, Bears had nothing at either DE or DT last year. People forget Billings was a pleasant surprise (though not much of a pass rusher) as a FA signing and Justin Jones wasn't that good in 2022. The latter got way overpaid this offseason in FA.
Yeah elite edge rushers are rarer and more coveted than just about any other position except for QB.
I agree with you and the H&J guys that edge is the Bears biggest NEED. I'm not sure that anyone represents good value there this year, especially if an elite WR or LT is sitting there at 9.

No I was on the JF1 stink bandwagon when his horrible performance was showing through the season. If you look back. I was all for trading down the #1 overall pick to get DJ Moore and more draft picks. What I said was this was prove it year for Fields. If you can't produce then we get rid of you.
Personally I was all for Anderson Jr that draft. I saw an elite pass rusher in the making but we needed picks and players far more.

I'm ratting out bearsinhouston on the stinky bandwagon last year... I was sitting next to him up there and he ripped a horrible fart. It wasn't JF1 stinking it up. Sorry BIH, I'm not trying to embarrass you, so much as to just set the record straight... and what on earth had you eaten that day? I think the dude with the drum that day passed out. That fart was Hall of Fame worthy...

I didn't think anyone noticed. I was hoping that everyone thought the driver passed out due to being dehydrated.

Yup wouldve been nice having Anderson but we ended up with what looks to be a future ProBowl, possible all pro RT, time will tell. I am glad Poles went against the prognosticators and grabbed Wright. Texans had a one of a kind day one draft.
