I agree. There are two things that I like about the current situation. It is the best situation for an incoming QB that I can remember. Some really do not realize the importance of this. I really believe that more QBs can succeed than actually do, and I think this is the environment they come into. (whether it be coaches, talent, etc). The NFL draft is set so that the worst teams get the best picks. Generally, the best QBs (theoretically) go to the worst teams. Almost guaranteeing having to climb out of a hole. Perhaps that is one reason that we see a lot of successful QBs picks further down in the draft. They go to the better teams and have a better chance of success.
The second thing is the fast processing (at least we think we see that). I don't know that we have seen that in a while. We keep hoping the new QB has that but then we see they don't. It can be taught to some degree (what degree, I don't know) because we saw it in Fields. He did process the field better the last part of the year. But Williams seems to have that already.
The biggest objective knock on Williams is (allegedly) that he crumbles under pressure. I hope that is not the case as he will see more pressure in the NFL than before. We have a decent line, but not an elite line so he is going to get pressured. I want to see how rattled he gets and how he deals with it. No elite QB does well when they are constantly being hit, but the best ones don't let it affect them the next game. It has yet to be determined how Williams will deal with this.
His team was giving up an average of 35 points and over 430 yards a game. Despite that he kept them in most games. Against Washington State (the national champion runner ups) he put up better numbers than Penix and put up 42 points. They lost only because USC's defense gave up 52 points and 500+ yards.
There's is no "objective" knock on him that he can't handle pressure. He handles it just fine.
That may be. Don’t shoot the messenger, I’ve read it in more than one article. Maybe true, maybe not.
