Im not arguing that the Steelers may do this but it makes very little sense to me. Wilson was traded off the Seahawks leaving them no plan at QB because he was a prima dona. The Broncos quickly found this out (along with the fact that his play was not as expected). If anyone feels JF1 was shocking, the hit the Broncos took to get rid of him was historic. Wilson will be turning 36 this year. Nothing could surprise me after this offseason so Steelers signing him long term will seemingly happen. Looking at JF1s rookie contract then he would only be a 1 year backup? They need to opt in for his 5th year by May if they want to have him year 5. I would think the Steelers would want to work out a Love type of contract to keep him yr 5 and on while saving money. He just turned 25 this month.
My conspiracy brain says Wheldon is the next HC after this season regardless of what happens record wise. Flus is gone.
(Unless he isn't and then I'll delete this post.)
I believe while Poles is here, Flus is here.
I mean they are friends after all. Friends usually back each other up.
Keeping Flus was not a sound business decision. It really makes zero sense while bringing in a rookie QB to a defensive minded HC who has a losing record.

That would be the best thing for Caleb's (or whoever the QB is) development. To stay in the same offense his nascent years with a head coach who was there when he was drafted and actually wants him and sees as HIS quarterback.

Yes, I agree, but really don't think it will happen. If Waldron does great things, it also makes the HC look good. I've never seen a successful season happen and then management says "this success was due to our OC and so even with a great year, we are going to replace our HC with our OC". The OC moves on, the HC stays, hires someone else and sputters for another year or two then gets fires (sometimes with the GM because they did not take earlier action). We have seen this movie before.
I don't know... maybe. But Wilson looks like a tired old guy descending. He is clearly not able to do things he used to do. Don't pull a "Denver" and do something they'll regret.
Russell Wilson is 35 years old. He is no teams future.
I don't think a 6th round value QB is the future either.
Tom Brady would like a word.
And before you all jump me, I'm not even remotely comparing Fields to Brady. All I'm saying is you have no clue if the Steelers view him as the future or not. I may love a house, and want to live there for the rest of my life...it doesn't mean I'm not going to try and get it for the cheapest price I can and use every ounce of leverage I have to do it. Joe Mixon was traded for a 7th round pick. Using your logic the Texans are gonna make him the 3rd string back and he might not make it out of training camp.
Gist of it is that teams looked as his tape and were not convinced of his value.
Doesn't believe Poles turned down better offers. (I hope he's right on this).
Mentions part of the issue was that Fields only has one year on his contract left.
My guess is, and it's all guessing, it was the difference of a 4th or 5th, or a 6th that could turn into a 4 if he plays. So not a huge difference. And I doubt they were offered a 4th. Backups aren't giving you high value; and the league sees him as a backup, for now.
He'll get his shot to start, just like every other 1st rd pick is always given.
