I was going to start a new thread using this YT video, but the way this thread is going, IMO, makes it a good a place as any.
The video below is published by a Washington DC sports radio talk show host, Craig Hoffman. His guest is NFL Network's Andrew Siciliano. I've followed Siciliano's work for some time, and I personally think he is a very fair and knowledgeable pro football journalist. They are discussing the whole does Washington trade up for the #1 pick or not, but form Washington's perspective. It is very interesting, and the Washington fans seem to be having exactly the same argument as the Bear fans. Do we trade down or not?
I feel that Siciliano has better sources than most of the folks covering the draft right now. He brings a different perspective on the values of Caleb Williams, Justin Fields, what trading up will cost Washington, what trading down will give Washington as far as draft capital goes, etc.
One scenario, but the one I most want . It gives the bears some great talent and a chance to plug a few other holes with quality players. Could draft. A
Been rethinking this draft and looking at the value investment in Fields. The loss of value to draft Tribiscuit , the failure of that , the loss of value to then get Fields . Can’t remember all that was given up from these two deals but it was a hell of a lot for an already poor team . Hoping to get lucky with 5th round picks or lower is what Fields had to play with his first two years. Head on a swivel! He finally shows improvement in year 3 and everyone gives up on him . … said that so I could say this . Trade first pick to move down , get one of these Stud receivers in the first six picks, keep Fields for his final shot year , draft McCarthy with the 9 ( if available). If not best OT available. Free Agency is going to have to improve the Defense along with what we can get trading down from 1. The big question is , is this year’s selection better than next years draft ? 1 more big trade down haul can put the Bears in total recovery from the previous screw ups from 2017 … see above ⬆️. We got a QB prospect in Fields pisses down his leg if he does BYE 👋, if he shines our prospect has a learning year , Fields has value for a two year deal or more , you evaluate McCarthy to keep or trade …. I’m rambling now so what do ya think ?!

To answer your question in bold -- YES
Appreciate it but that ship has already sailed. CW will be the Bears pick at #1. It's a done deal already.
A) Williams >> any other QB prospect in this draft. It isn't close. We have the #1 pick AGAIN (via a miracle) and can't pass on him after passing on Stroud last year. The rest of the league sees taking CW at #1 as a complete no-brainer. Only Bears fans find this controversial.
B) Fields simply isn't nearly as good as many Bears fans persist in believing. He has clear, intractable flaws as a passer that have improved only modestly since college. He simply doesn't look like the type of QB you are gonna pay big bucks right now so you are banking on him having a huge jump in year 4 which is unlikely to materialize. He's a bottom-third QB by most important passing stats and bottom-5 in some critical ones like 4th Q and 3rd down metrics. The reason he isn't bringing more "value" in trade is that no other team is that excited about him either, especailly with only 1 year left on his rookie contract.
C) The "haul" you think you're getting from trading the #1 pick is not as important as finally getting a true franchise QB. We currently have the 4th best QB in the division right now. Fixing that is way better than an extra 1st in 2025 or 2026. If we don't, we will be eating Green Bay's dust for another 15 years.

And, as much as I like Fields (and I do), I figure it will be best to start fresh. The Bears are in a position to get this right, this time - and with a fresh rookie contract. It sure looks like the Bears have a better O coaching staff in place. I have to believe the O roster talent going into this season will be significantly better than past years. It's like the planets are all lined up to (finally) build a solid offense here. And I agree, that Caleb Williams is on a tier all by himself above the "best of the rest" guys.

sadly, you may be right. JF would have to forget all the crap that's been force fed to him and learn a new system AGAIN. It is hard to overcome habits, and maybe a new guy would be able to start right in learning good ones if we have the right coaching staff. Fields would have to regress before getting better.
I will always be on the fence here...
Keep JF and improve the O? I'm on board.
Keep JF, draft CW and trade JF later if CW works out? I'm on board.

Well said. As good of a guy as JF appears to be, it’s time to move on. If the Bears decide to keep him, so be it! I’ll support them regardless…
