So far, its not even close. But Fields could blossom, as did Brees.
+1 I think a person can lose their mind trying to figure out these quarterbacks nowadays. If we do land a top-tier QB in this draft, no matter who that is, I'm hoping we never let him go no matter how much he costs. It is so hard to find one of the great ones. They are few and far between, right?
The difference is that Brees was more committed to playing within the pocket. That’s the question about Williams. As they say, “play within the structure of the offense”. We don’t need a QB who can scramble around all over the field. We already have one who’s bigger and faster than Williams.
In fairness, I believe Caleb Williams didn't have a pocket to work with this past year. It was nonexistent (very Bears like situation). He was running for his life doing a good Fields imitation. Seriously, and not joking here, I went back this past week and watched a lot of his play, on top of having watched him playing live this season (on TV) - and he looked SO much like Justin Fields making some great plays on the run, but often holding onto the ball too long as he was running around trying not to get sacked.
If the Bears want a guy to work out of the pocket more, then there has to be a pocket to begin with. Fix the interior OL and that can be there. I got so sick of watching the pitiful center giving up the pocket in a heartbeat all season long. Pitiful. Just pitiful to watch. Jenkins was good until he did the usual IR thing and couldn't play. And Nate Davis was a huge disappointment.
I guess you’d need to look at some of the games he won and got good protection. Did he look more like Brees or Fields in those games? That would be the question.

It's not like Brees needed to "blossom" his first full year as a started he threw for 3k yards, not enough TD's and to many Int's(like most rookies). 2nd year injured and bad. 3rd year he exploded though 3k yards almost 4:1 TD/Int ratio; everything you want in a qb.
SD would have happily kept him if they hadn't already drafted Rivers; and guarantee they regretted that as they never got to a SB w/Rivers and Brees went on to win one w/NO's.
JF won't blossom like that, b/c this was his 3rd year and he has struggled to put much better passing numbers then Bree's bad 2nd year.

If you have already lost it, could it be used to twist your mind enough to get it back?

Wasn't that question answered in Christmas Vacation?
