First I want to say that this is in an article. So it is someone writing something. It doesn't have to be true. It does say that there were rumors picked up at the Senior Bowl and this was one, but it seems too far fetched for even the fevered minds of Bears executives. Well.... at least now that Teddy is gone anyway.
So, first, a link to the article.

Then, a short out take.
Dave Richard, who was covering the Senior Bowl for CBS Sports, shared a nugget from what he heard while on reporting duty. And I think it is worth sharing:
Enough people believe the Bears will hold on to the No. 1 pick and draft USC’s Caleb Williams, citing that it’s a better deal financially for them to have him on his rookie contract for as many as five years rather than extend Justin Fields. Folks think Fields will bring back a conditional draft pick that turns into a first-round pick in 2025 if Fields leads his new team to the playoffs.
So, what this is saying is that we use the first pick to take a QB so that we can get the benefit of getting 5 years of lower payroll. OK, so far so good. You still have 2 years left on JF, but if you don't think he is any good, you go for the guy you think is better. So, still good. But then you count on getting a first round pick back for JF because you think he will get the other team into the playoffs. Huh? So you think JF can get you to the playoffs, but you trade him to get a first round pick down the road. So now you have a guy that you picked that you (I assume) think will also get you to the playoffs. Maybe. Just like JF. And you did this for 3 more years of lower payroll? SO then what do you do with the first round pick you just got for JF getting to the other teams playoff? Trade for another QB and then get rid of Williams for another first round pick if he gets his new team to the playoffs?
I feel like I just read this but no longer understand English comprehension (sure, I never comprehended well anyway but that is for another day). This just can't be real. Guys that run billion dollar enterprises simply can't think like this. It makes Madden look like low risk horse trading.
Pick a QB that has potential. Find that you are unable to realize that potential. Trade him to another team that you hope can realize that potential, hoping for first round compensation when it happens. Then, I assume pick a new QB with that first round pick since you just traded yours away. You get a few more years of low pay as a bonus. This sounds like a winning strategy. Someone pinch me. Not there, dammit! Definitely Stable Genius level stuff.
