I figure Poles shouldn't lead with his best offer, but he walks a bit of a tightrope in that you don't want to insult the guy with too much of a lowball offer.

Just an observation on this topic. Not trying to discuss, debate, or anything like that on the merits of offering JJ any type of contract.
More on how much data there is behind the story. From what I can see, there is only one source for this story. A single tweet by MJ Hurley of ThirdDownThursday. Hi is a big Packer fan and works on the fringes of NFL coverage for various media (SI, a couple of regional newspapers, etc). I am not trying to impeach the source. Just saying that it could be a real insider peek into what's happening, but it also could be total speculation.
Or maybe simply wait for the people who are really involved to do and/or say something.
