The Seahawks won two Super Bowls if they just run the damn ball with Beastmode from the 1-yard line. Brady and Mahomes won 7 of the 12 games. We would all love to have Brady or Mahomes. But you can still win with a lesser QB and a leading scoring defense. The 49ers could have won 20-19 but for the missed extra point.
I will tell you for about the fourth time that I’m only focused on being Super Bowl ready by 2025.
What ifs are just that. We don't know if they would or wouldn't. The fact of the matter is, the Seahawks were carried by a legit defense that usually has 1-3 year window. Once that window is gone. Its gone. We experienced that with our 2018 defense. Which was still elite in 2019 but had a bad QB and Nagy scheme figured out.
You can be Super Bowl ready by 2025 with Williams at QB. Mahomes in his first year starting threw 50 TDs and went to the AFC Championship. In his second year starting he won a Super Bowl.
Unlike the AFC which is stacked with legit QBs. The NFC doesn't have a Mahomes, Allen, or Burrow. Or even a Herbert or Jackson. If Williams is the real deal. You own the NFC for the next 10-15 years. Most likely going to multiple Super Bowls.
Outside of this year. Mahomes never had a top 10 total defense in his career yet has a winning record when an opponent scores 28+ points on his defense.
So QBs do matter.
Dak is in the perfect system where he has a great oline, great wrs, great rbs throughout most of his career. Yet even that isn't enough for the cowboys to make it to the NFC Championship game. Dak isn't a Tier 1 QB. He's not even a Tier 2 QB who can lead his team to a Super Bowl. The fact he hasn't even went to an NFC Championship game since he became a starter with the weapons he has proves it.
Tier 1: Top QB who can make everyone better around him. Mahomes and Rodgers for example Tier 2: QBs with a perfect team that can win you a ring: Stafford and Purdy for example Tier 3: QBs even with the perfect situation around him can't do anything with it. Dak and Tannehill
I never said QB's don't matter. But the fact of the matter is other things matter too. Mike McCarthy turtles up in big spots. He did it in Green Bay, and he's doing it now in Dallas. Its who he is.
There are a number of moving parts to a team that collectively determine how well they perform. One important part is obviously the QB. It is not the only part that matters though. The Bears need to identify who is the best QB1 (Fields or a drafted QB) and get that guy and support him. Poles needs to get this right. I love Fields but if a draft guy looks better then get the best.
I think most of those moving parts are possibly more important than the QB. Not that the QB is not critical. But that without the right management and coaching infrastructure, you may never be able to pull off having a competitive franchise year in and year out.
I agree wholeheartedly with motm that drafting Mahomes is what made the difference at KC. But it was bringing in an excellent college QB into a well thought out and very well-run program. And then letting him ride the bench the first year. You can argue that the same or a similar thing happened to both Rogers and Brady.
Regardless of who the QB is, unless we have the leadership and management right, we will continue down the same old path.

I don't think I can ever remember a new QB being allowed to sit and learn for a full season. The coaches have always put them in early

Yes, you need a good "team" and not just a guy. But once you have that QB1 right, then you can build out around him for many years... these guys can play a long time at QB. I think we get wrapped around the axle thinking it is an "either/or" thing. But all of the moving parts are important. If one component is flat broken then the team is not going to overcome that. If Warren/Poles/Cunningham are good - and I believe they are. Then we have the front office now. That part is probably as good as we have seen here in forever. I like the coaching staff that has been assembled for this year. There are seasoned coaches on that staff now - and Eberflus is no longer a rookie HC too. I like the front office and coaching staff.
I like how the roster has been reset and we have a number of young and ascending players. We won't have to overcome (like last year) the 30 new youngsters on the roster. I do like how much the roster improved in year-1 of the rebuild, and we have the resources to take the talent to an entirely new level this season. Watch it happen. It's coming.
But do we have the QB1 right?
If we don't then we are not going anywhere. It's like having a nice sports car without an engine. You are not going ANYWHERE without the motor that powers that nice sports car. If Fields is the guy, fine. If not, get the guy we need. This QB class has a lot more QB talent than I've seen in awhile. If we DO need to draft a QB, then THIS is a mighty good year to have that #1 draft pick. Use it. Don't go beyond this year without a permanent fix to the QB1 position. JMO.

The thing that continues to bear repeating is that a pick this year is a pick. It is not a permanent fix until our O is matched to that persons talent and we see that persons talent is in fact what we hoped it would be. In other words, you pick a guy and hope he is the real deal and hold your breath for most of the season to see if they guessed right.

I totally agree. Rookies are rookies, and Stroud is not the usual way it plays out for a rookie QB. But at least get that guy in place who can be the guy here for many many years. If that guy is Fields, then fantastic. If he is not the guy then get the guy. Now. That is what the triumvirate of Warren/Poles/Cunningham need to figure out, with input from the scouts and coaching staff. If they see one of these guys in the draft as truly elite, and they don't see Fields being at that level - then get your guy in place this year because you may never get the chance to do so in future years.
EDIT: Bears need to add a WR and C, and some depth players. If they can't get that done with the resources they have this year then they are tick me off for sure.
Which make sense. Too many question marks with Fields to justify keeping him when you have the #1 overall pick and best prospect QB in the draft since Andrew Luck. Plus this allows both Flus and Poles 2-3 more years on the team.
