They talked about that. It is customary for the GM to say “I support the coach 100%” in the press conference and then move on to the next question. That’s not what Poles did. Hoge read the whole quote. Poles went on and on about what a wonderful job Eberflus is doing. He would destroy whatever is left of his own credibility, if he now turned around and recommended firing Flus. He loves the guy.
Hoge noted that 3 of Eberflus’ 5 wins in 2 years have been against losing/fired coaches. Anyway, I do believe beating Panthers and Cardinals upcoming games is the only way Eberflus/Poles survive.
Well, I don't know but that's a ridiculous standard if there every was one. Panthers are probably the single worst team in the NFL after a massive teardown last year* and the Cards are actively tanking so hard they aren't even pretending they're trying to win. The bar needs to be way higher than that for any self-respecting organization.
Of course, this is the same franchise that kept Pace/Nagy way too long because they "collaborated well" while the team was swirling down the drain. So these guys don't exactly require much to be impressed.
*You have talked about the Bears 2022 tank being "the biggest since 2001" or whatever. The Panthers traded away McCaffrey and DJ Moore -- two star caliber players in their prime -- plus a few other minor actors.
That’s the point. The Panthers and Cards are so bad that, if Bears can’t even beat those teams, Poles/Eberflus are doomed. The “bar” according to Poles is to win more games than last year, so beating these 2 teams gets him over the bar.

But that's the way the game is played. It reminded me of that scene in The Godfather where Michael assures Carlo, his "loved" brother-in-law that his life will be spared. Gently tells him he wouldn't make his sister a widow, and reminded him that he was the godfather of his child. Then about 1 minute later Michael watches as Carlo is strangled to death.
LOL, of course Poles says "he loves the guy" and of course he will give him the GM equivalent of the "Michael Corleone Treatment" if he feels it necessary at the end of the season. That's just the way it works.

So you agree then that the 2023 Panthers (and probably Cardinals too) "out-tanked" the 2022 Bears?

In a conventional tank, you skim off the top of your roster. Poles went much deeper than any team in the last 20 years, including several such as the 2021 Lions that have had considerably worse records than the 2021 Bears. The idea of tanking is to pile up draft picks and cap space vs. other GMs. Poles is in a league of his own in that respect, but has pretty much pissed away that advantage.

Which he did. Bears STILL have most cap space and two upcoming FRPs (probably very high FRPs).
So we are now done with this stuff now, right?
The "tank" was well-done. Almost perfectly executed with a bit of luck assisting. One can justifiably criticize the early rebuild, I fully agree, but there was nothing wrong with the teardown. It was probably a year too late actually.

Well, you totally missed the point. Poles went way beyond anything ever done in at least 20 years. That’s as far back as I went. I was (and remain) skeptical that he dug himself into a hole too deep to dig out even with all his draft picks and cap space. So far, the skepticism appears warranted. I am happy to be done with this, or else we’re back into dead horse beating.

I don’t know. Hoge and Jahns had a different take on it. They say it’s normal for the GM to back the head coach in this situation, but Poles went way beyond what is expected. If I were Poles and thought there’s a good chance Eberflus will be fired, I would damn him with faint praise so that I don’t look ridiculous firing him 9 games after extolling him as a terrific coach. And if Warren is inclined to fire Eberflus, he would ask himself, “Considering his extreme statements supporting Eberflus, is Poles the right guy to help me choose the next head coach?”

Not gonna lie, I share your concerns. Also concerned that Poles and Flus are close personally and that could cloud judgment.
If they run this coaching staff back another year with Fields as QB, they will be doubling down on what clearly isn't working. Getsy and Fields are clearly oil & water when it comes to scheme fit--something they many times cited as important to them.
If they run this coaching staff back another year with a new QB, they'd be making the same elementary mistake they have done many times before--mismatching the coaching staff and QB and not synchronizing them. I have been over the pitfalls of that here a million times.
There's virtually nothing that could change my mind at this point -- FLUTSY NEEDS TO GO.

I would just say that Flus has had to flush two assistant coaches already, and that's what we know about. He's lost control as a personnel manager and the locker room as a coach. Sorry but he's cooked.
