I feel sorry for the guy. He is attempting to keep the players positive enough to pull out of this and finish these final 8 games ascending and winning a number of them. And that is one possible outcome.
He could still survive this.
I'm not saying he should or should not survive this season - but I 100% understand that he still believes these players can pull through and do well this last half of the season. Hey, there are a few things that could happen that would do just that. What if Fields would ball out this last half of the season and look like he did in 2 of those last games where he honestly looked like a really sound QB1? What if the D is better in these games also? Not saying it will happen but it could. Eberflus is just trying to be a good coach and keep the players engaged and believing in themselves and the team. So far he has not lost them.
But the sports beat reporters are different. He has lost them. And he's lost a lot of the fan base. They don't believe. But can't fault the guy for staying in there trying. In fact I admire that. I don't want to see the guy fall apart.
As for Eberflus, he’s trying to save his job, but I think that ship has already sailed — or at least should have. By your own words, the definition of a successful rebuild is SIGNIFICANT progress from 2022 to 2023. We sure as hell don’t have that, and it’s Warren’s job to hold Poles and Eberflus accountable for this debacle.
That may all be true but I don't hate the guy for failing. He of all people wasn't wanting to fail. A lot of fans turn on these coaches and make it personal. I just feel really really bad for everyone because nobody wins in these situations. Fans lose. Team loses. The coaches not only lose they lose their jobs - not because they didn't try but because try as they might, they couldn't get it done.
Today I was also thinking of how good it felt when we thought we finally had our franchise QB and an ascending GM and HC. Fields, Poles, Eberflus - heck, all of the Chicago fanbase was on top of the world. We had hope that this thing was finally going to turn around. I believe the people all worked hard to achieve the dream. But just couldn't get it done. I don't relish people losing their jobs even though I accept the fact that this is how it works in sports. Heck, I felt bad when Lovie left... I knew it was the right thing and it was time for him to go. But I never hated the man. That's just how I am wired. Right now I feel bad for everyone, even the failed coaches and players.
