Why isn’t there a choice like “I wouldn’t bet the farm on him, but I’m not drafting a QB, unless he implodes in these last 12 games.” ?? That’s where I’m at, and doesn’t quite fit any of the choices offered.
Well, its going to come down to a binary choice next spring.
Either you commit to Fields as the guy to build around OR you draft a new QB. Particularly if we have a very high pick.
Great idea for a thread. I talked about my own Fields-o-Meter before but you put it on screen.
For me, obviously I was down on him the first 3 weeks and deservedly so as he was a bottom-5 QB in the league then. The last 2 weeks he's been night-and-day different and looks like a QB the "light is coming on for".
Is this a sign he's ascending and heading for a breakout year? Or is it just a flash in the pan against some bad defenses?
I don't know. The next 12 games are critical. The next 12 games determine Fields' future career trajectory and Poles' choice of paths forward for the team.
Right now, I'm in the HOPEFUL BUT UNCONVINCED category. I'm really hoping JF will convince me. I want to believe.
If he can establish himself as a clear top-10 QB this season, it's game on for us. We go all-in this offseason with 2 FRPs plus a ton of cap space and we start being a consistent playoff team in 2024.
That's very much where I am at too. The next 12 games are critical. If Fields does establish himself as a clear top-10 QB this season, and the team can go all-in this offseason with the 2 FRPs plus a ton of cap space, does that mean Eberflus should stay as the HC? I'm thinking that even if Fields checks all the boxes in these 12 games, the team itself is probably a .500 win team at best, and probably not quite at that level. Or, do you think the team turns over the coaching staff and the new HC has to be a Fields guy? I ask because I can see it's not out of the realm of possibility that Fields does check all the boxes this season. Not saying it will happen but that it very well could happen. So, what happens to 'Flus in that scenario?
The thread is about Fields so I didn't comment on the coaches. That's a different and separate argument I'm sure we will debate over and over.

I can already think of several pros and cons.
+1 That's fair. And it's all wild conjecture at this point anyway because who knows how the season will go from here. I only asked because my mind is racing at this point when I consider the outcomes if in fact Fields does check all the boxes in these final 12 games. Most fans wanted Eberflus fired and Fields gone - after those first 3 games of the season it was a horrific beginning to the season. I know how inflexible fans can be once they make up their minds about coaches or players. I am just curious how many fans would be willing to change their minds on Fields and/or Eberflus. I agree it's a topic for another day in another thread. I'm just thinking how I would go on the subject myself because two weeks ago I wanted them both gone too.
I watched a podcast earlier today where one of the people made a good comment. He said that at the end of the season you have to look at each player - and I would add here that it also applies to each coach - and ask yourself if that person can help the Bears ultimately win a Super Bowl. At first that comment seems over the top. But when you think about it, yes, that really is the best way to look at Fields and every single player and coach. As you look at each one and ask yourself that question, it helps clarify things a bit in your own mind as far as weighing if they should stay or go. I think that in 12 games we will have a lot more definitive feelings about each person, including Eberflus.

Because I knew I needed one more middling choice but I didn't know now to phrase it and wasn't sure of it was covered with the other middle choices. 😅

I can almost go with your first choice. I would put it this way: “He’s my guy unless I see him going backwards these last 12 games.”

I feel that!
This might be controversial, unless Fields leads this team to 10ish wins down the stretch and to the playoffs, I want the GM to do his due diligence on these QBs. This has less to do with Fields and more to do with making sure you get the QB position correct.
Also, if we keep Fields, I want a QB drafted in the 4th round, or later. I know there's a following for Bagent, but I want QB insurance — for lack of better term, someone to develop with real talent.

I really believe this guy could be a Brock Purdy level QB in the NFL. He must have some legit talent because the Bears are scared to put him on our practice squad - apparently the NFL knows the kid has talent and would sign him onto their 53-man squad. Normally, I would want a young developmental QB drafted every few drafts. But now that we have Bagent, I think he is our developmental QB for now... you really can't develop two young guys at the same time. A team barely has time to devote to one developmental QB. A third wouldn't get any real time. LOL, at least that's my thought. In an ideal world Fields ends up being our QB1 for the next 10 or 12 years and Bagent a solid backup for the foreseeable future.

I know this thread is about Fields and not coaching but Purdy has Kyle Shanahan and a stacked team around him. I'm not saying Brock is JUST a system's QB, because every signal caller benefits from being in a great one. BCB is legit but he couldn't do what he's doing in SF in Chi and there current staff. The 49ers regime has been together for seven seasons; made several deep playoffs runs; and have Pro-Bowlers at several key spots. We haven't seen Brock out of a near perfect situation and if he can make chicken salad out of chicken feathers.
I’m in the “not sold yet” category. 2 games don’t equate to he’s our savior. Before we show him the money, he needs to consistently show he’s worth it.
