The League has created a dysfunctional environment by re-writing the rules to favor the passing game to the point that the QB position is coveted to the point of craziness. It's not good for football. The officiating needs adjusted more in favor of a balance between D and O. And you can't have 1 position so far out of whack that guys are wanting to own part of the teams - in addition to the obscene contracts they are getting now... while other positions, like the RB position, are so devalued. It's all about the QB and passing game. It is dysfunctional and needs correction.
Blame fantasy football for that. I would love to see an old school 2000's era football be allowed again. Sadly the offense and more important the QB and WR sell the game now. Rules have been in place to make these the most important positions in the game. Its sad in a way because this just leads to a few teams going to the playoffs every year because they have an elite QB.
Patrick Mahomes Went to 3 Super Bowls in the past 4 years and been to all 4 AFC champ games. He's honestly going to be the closest thing to the next tom brady and I'm sure the NFL will do what it takes to make it as close as possible for him.

I agree with you completely.
The rules changes favoring offense over defense and passing over rushing have skewed the game too heavily toward QBs. If anyone doesn't believe me, check out how QB salaries have inflated as a % of the salary cap. Money talks.
I think it's bad for competitiveness and "parity". Dating myself here but it used to be that you could put together a contending team with a halfway decent QB combined with a stout defense and good running attack. That's really really hard to do nowadays. Not impossible but very difficult.
It's become a league of "haves and have-nots" at QB. And the have-nots are so desperate to join the haves that teams do things like spending 3 1st-round picks on a QB who's only played 1 season of college ball at North Dakota State 2 years ago.

I know. But I do wonder how sustainable this business model will be for the 32 franchises in the near future? I think it leaves a lot of cities out in the cold because great QBs are about as plentiful as unicorns. The majority of the 32 teams do not have one, and it is crazy-difficult to get one (we are the poster boy for that, but far far from being the only franchise that has struggled). Mediocre QBs are getting vastly overpaid to the point it hurts the teams ability to complete a solid roster to compete. Look at how many meh teams we have now. We have a zillion televised games but the games themselves are often nothing you want to watch, as far as a prime time national broadcast... I may watch a few minutes and then just turn the channel because it's a poor product that the NFL is putting out there with many of these games. LOL, it's downright painful to watch the game announcers trying desperately to breath some kind of life into these games that have the deadbeat teams playing.
I've got to believe the owners will try to adjust this somehow. I'm not talking about making it 1950's "three yards and a cloud of dust" thing. Not at all. But just not this out of whack artificial boost to the passing game right now. If they make that adjustment the game will still be just as popular as it is right now because the quality of the play will be better... games that are more watchable. I don't know... maybe I'd just a disgruntled old guy who longs to watch better football, like we used to see with great offenses but also great defenses too.

I'd like to see the NFL move things back in the opposite direction a little but I'm not holding my breath. They like the highlight reel scores and fantasy money.
Remember the 2006 Bears? Almost 20 years ago now and a very rare example of a great defense and ST team that went far despite a marginal QB.
The league then legislated kick returns out of the game. Can't allow that.

Absolutely agree, the disparity and lunacy in the salary structure is beyond maddening. Look at this table I pulled (added the % column) from OTC. You just can't have a non winning SB QB pulling in over 15% of the teams top 51 CAP.
I don't believe an untested rookie should have any stake in ownership. If anything, I would like to see performance-based contracts. If you are a Top -5 QB, then great you get your 30+Mil. If you are a bottom 5 QB or have a horrific game, you lose some of that 30 + Mil. How many times have we seen players sign big contracts after their rookie deal and then fade away into obscurity?

That chart is fascinating. And notice the Cousins' contract that seemed so extremely outlandish at the time - is the CHEAPEST contract on that list now! If the league can't adjust this model somehow, then the sport will suffer. Much more than what we see now. There has to be a happy medium here that keeps the game exciting, but doesn't allow it to become a trash sport... that will ultimately kill off the fan fervor too. It will kill the goose that lays the golden $$$ eggs for so many people who feed on the money generated by this sport.

How about NFL adopts a rule that no salary can be more than 15% of the cap? The players association would go for that, as the effect would be to spread the money around more evenly.
