One sad thing about his career is that he never played in a playoff game. Not one. The Bears of that era were really bad. Bad teams. I remember those years well. You didn't watch the Bears to see wins. You knew they were not gonna win. You watched the games to see Butkus and Sayers. They were the team back then. Nothing around them was good.

Exactly, 2 stars and nothing.... Lazy management. +Sayers lasted so shortly
I did enjoy some of the stories told last night during the game broadcast. Would have loved to see some of that live, like him taking the ball out of an opponent's hand, shaking it in front of the ref and the ref going ahead and calling it a fumble, just to avoid 51's ire. love it.
Quoth Deacon Jones: "Roses are red, violets are blue, if you have any sense, you'll keep Butkus away from you"
Have seen that quote numerous times, but still brings a smile to my face each time.

RIP DB51, GOAT
Yup, see my sig here. My fav for years, well since ever.
What can I say about Butkus that hasn't been said already. He was my guy...he was the one who made me want to play the position. Not Singletary, not Seau or Carson, or Banks, or Taylor (I'm from Jersey remember)...it was Butkus! I wanted to hit like him, I wanted to intimidate like him...and I never came remotely close...but damn I tried! LOL! I used to watch his segment from the film Crunch Time before every game. He was my dads idol, and he was my idol. To me there will never be another linebacker as good as he was. I'm sad he didn't get to see the Bears win another Super Bowl in his lifetime...I hope some of the other greats don't have to suffer that same fate.
