Chicago Bears Make Intriguing Addition To Their Secondary
The Chicago Bears know their weaknesses by this point in the season. It became clear that defensively they needed to start finding help in the secondary. Nowhere more so than cornerback where injuries have haunted them. Kyle Fuller, Deiondre Hall, Bryce Callahan and Tracey Porter all have promise but just haven’t been able to stay healthy.
Thus GM Ryan Pace has continued trying to find bodies who might be able to help. One name that surfaced on the radar was Johnthan Banks, a former second round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2013. He was released due to production issues, as well as disagreements with the coaching staff over playing time.
He spent a brief time in Detroit before being waived. Now he’s headed to Chicago.
It may seem like a minor depth move, but there is at least a little intrigue to it. He was a popular name coming out of the draft. At 6’2″ he exhibits ideal size and drew comparisons to current Denver Broncos Pro Bowler Aqib Talib. NFL.com had plenty of positive things to say about him.
“Height, length and competitive nature could make him a starter. Good hands for the interception, can high-point passes and make difficult catches with superb concentration. Effective on jump balls in end zone and knocks away passes from behind without interfering. Does not give up on plays even as receiver is catching the ball. Excellent mirror and change of direction skills. Not asked to play a lot of press coverage and hes not very strong, but he has a quick disruptive jam.”
This is exactly the type of cornerback that Vic Fangio covets, and the best part is Banks may finally be entering a scheme that fits his skills perfectly. Remember that both Tampa Bay and Detroit run 4-3 systems that don’t call for as much press-man coverages. It will be different in Chicago, presuming he’s able to make the roster.
