I know it is a solemn remembrance for those who served - and gave their lives for our nations freedom. I am reminded that freedom isn't "free" because it has come at great cost... the lives of countless people who gave their lives to preserve it.

On a lighter note, I am grilling out tonight. My wife and I just got back from a week in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I did some trout fly-fishing there, and caught a LOT of rainbow trout - including this monster. I battled that guy for a long time before I landed him. I absolutely love to fish. Hope to do a lot of fly fishing this summer :-)

So, what are you guys up to... and any plans for this summer?

On Memorial Day I usually reflect on the experiences of my family in WWII and Vietnam. My father and his brother served in the Army in Europe. One of my brothers did two tours in Vietnam. From my relationship with all three of them I came to realize the price our soldiers pay in war. I was lucky that I never was drafted to serve in Vietnam.

We spent our Sunday in the back yard patio. Grilled out. The dog loves snoozing in shady patches of grass. A very nice and peaceful Sunday.

We've been bitten pretty hard by the travel bug and have another trip planned for the last half of July. Going back to South Africa for another safari. If you have the opportunity to do this, I recommend it highly.

Our 35th anniversary was yesterday, so we went and visited our 4 year old twin grandson and granddaughter. Fun times! Memorial Day Golf Tournament today which has a somber and meaningful ceremony beforehand. Short trip for 3-4 days to Asheville NC this summer and a long trip to Colorado and New Mexico in the fall. We’re driving so lots of side trips along the way…

We drove through Ashville on our way to Lake Toxaway, NC. That is a beautiful drive.

For all that have served and their Families, Mine thanks you.

We had our long weekend last week in honour of Queen Victoria. I don't care much for the royalty but do appreciate the day of. So I am at work right now typing this but I did grill a few steaks and chicken breasts yesterday so I did that in honour of my American Families!

Yes. The Blue Ridge Mountain Parkway goes through that area. We were staying about 40 miles or so southwest of Ashville.

Memorial Day has special meaning to me. For the past few decades, I have made it a personal mission to educate people on the differences between U.S. dates honoring people who have served. This meme is my primary method because I've gotten tired of trying to explain it to people in a patient way, only to see conversations end with stupid statements like "I want to say "Happy Memorial Day! Why are you trying to take that away from me!"

Like, b!%&#... you can't lose what you ain't never got!

Even worse than saying Happy... is thanking a living servicemember or veteran for their service. If it's never dawned on you, please understand you may not be aware of where you tread by thanking a servicemember or veteran on a day when they're honoring and remembering people they have lost. Like grandma used to say, "it's better to remain silent and let people think you're stupid, than speaking and removing all doubt."

Anyway, I hope everyone enjoys Memorial Day; it's the idea of America that persists and it's our honor to remember those who gave all in hopes of keeping the idea alive.

It's the day after here in Japan. It rained yesterday, but I still broke out the BBQ and did up some sirloins and beer brats (smothered in onions, of course). Even the wife was impressed. It was a "card night" (usually 500 rummy) and even the dog got in on the grub (minus the onions).
