Poles should offer Payne $20M just to test the water, and maybe entice Commanders to trade him to Bears as Poles drives up the cost to keep him. It’s kinda dirty tactic, whatever it takes. This ain’t bean bag!

I'm not giving up our first round pick for Payne.
Don’t have to trade any picks. He is a non-exclusive FA. Poles might just buy him by driving up the price, but my suggestion was more sinister. Poles says, “Either trade him to us on our terms or we’ll just buy him outright and you get Nothing.”

Unless I’m mistaken (and that happens quite often) non-exclusive tag means if the Bears and Payne agreed to a deal then WSH gets TWO of our first rounders. Pass.

There's no need to. Dre'Mont Jones looks all but certain to hit FA now (wasn't tagged) and Poles should be on that like flies on poop.
He's exactly the kind of FA worth taking a risk on--young, healthy, ascending, and likely changing teams due to poor cap management by Denver than any play-specific reason. Go get him!
David, you bemoaned letting Hicks go, even though he was past his prime and had been hurt a lot recently. Jones would be the Hicks-replacement you have been seeking.

Yeah, and I forgot that non-exclusive contract for Payne requires giving them draft picks. So let’s add one more Jones. There’s also a good RT Jones in the draft. We could end up with 5 Jones on the team.
McGary, but I also like Ja'Wan Taylor from Jacksonville. Even younger at 25 years old, and seems to be on the rise. Give me Dre'Mont and Zach Allen on the defensive line please! Also, Patriots didn't franchise Jonathan Jones...would make our corners ELITE!
POST-CAROLINA TRADE FA
Coming into this offseason, Bears had 4 major holes at key, high-impact positions -- WR, DT, DE/Edge, and RT.
He's filled the hole at WR. Not saying he won't add a draft pick, I think he will (mid-rounder for slot?), but he's filled that need via trade.
I see Poles having 2 major "must gets" over the next 2 weeks to fill 2 of the remaining 3 holes.
RT: I've come around to thinking that Jawan Taylor is my #1 FA target. He's young and ascending and has been durable. Great pass blocker but less good in the running game (opposite of McGlinchey and McGary). Since protecting Fields has to take precedence in my mind over run blocking, Taylor in my guy with MM as the fallback option.
DT: Really want Dremont Jones here. Maybe Hargrave as the fallback but I strongly prefer the younger player with more tread left on the tires.
That leaves Edge/DE and FA doesn't offer much help there except as depth/rotational pieces. If the board falls favorably, I'm looking to draft Edge in round 1. Our pass rush was literally the league's worst last year and this is a key, high-impact need.

Agree. As much as I'd love to see JSN added to this receiving corp, edge is the higher priority. In fact I could see edge being the first two picks made. I'd love to see them add the WR from Princeton in the later rounds however.

I'd love to have JSN too. Mocked him to us at #9 before the trade went down. Things have changed now. We have two FRPs next year to add another WR if needed.
I'm just trying to be realistic here and my priority has shifted now to the trenches. Both our lines sucked hard last year. Our DL was the leagues absolute worst and I don't think that's an exaggeration. And our OL was one of the leagues worst in pass pro. Give Fields confidence in his protection and and extra 1/2 second to throw and I think this WR group + Kmet can do some damage. Opposing defenses won't be able to just double Mooney knowing no one else can hurt them like they did in 2022.
