The question with him is does how much does Poles want to spend on a guy whose essentially a one trick pony edge rusher who doesn't appear to have much ambition to be a run stopper. He may be a better pass rusher than Muhammad was but again we'd have a guy who can't set the edge and our run defense suffers.
His 2 year deal with Indy paid $13 AAV. If he's looking for anywhere near that number IMHO he's probably asking far more than Poles would pay at least right now. The draft appears to be deep in DE talent and knowing Poles he may be content to see who he can snag there and also find out how much Robinson has progressed since last year. He may be a guy who can give what Ngakoue has in the past.
You bring up a good point in regards to Yannicks inability or unwillingness to play the run. Thats probably why he's still a free agent and I'd imagine as more time goes by his price is going to have to come down. Depending on what the Bears do in the draft he might make more sense. If they draft a guy like Van Ness...he is more than capable of playing the run. Now Yannick would strictly be a passing downs guy. I wouldn't pay that guy $13 mill...but Poles may not have to.
The only reason Yannick is still available is that he blows in run defense.
This is a guy that has had 8 or more sacks 6 straight years yet have been on like 5 different teams. That's insane. Decent pass rushers rarely hit FA but he seems to be the exception. And my guess is because he's basically a 3rd down DE only and you don't want him out there when the O might run the ball.

He's listed at 6'2"/246lbs so barely bigger than TJ Edwards. He's basically built as a 3-4 OLB. There's no way I see him fitting what Flus says he wants in a 4-3 DE. There may be a whole lot more guys like him who could pull in 10 sacks a year if they sell out to pass rush every down and never set an edge or play the run. Not worth it IMHO.

He is smallish & I am not sure if this possibility has been brought up but Carl Lawson if cut would be an intreaguing signing for the edge. He has had very good QB pressure PFF grades and decent run grades. He suffered a terrible injury in 2021 and showed definite signs of rust on occasion. With all that said, he still got to the QB for 7 sacks last year. If cut I would give him 2/25M with 12M guaranteed and an 8M signing bonus. 2023 CAP hit = 6M.
Here's at least a little of what Poles has on his plate. As DavidL has brought up Poles still has cash he has to spend in 2023. We have more draft picks and higher draft picks that will consume some of that and a trio of possible extensions to close on as well but those aren't assured.
Post draft there will always be a few more vets let go when and where teams have drafted rookies who may replace them. If we draft a top rookie OC prospect what are the chances we have both Whitehair and Patrick on our roster? Maybe for camp while they figure out the OL but not beyond that.
Once we've drafted Poles and Flus should have a decent idea of how many potential starters they got in this draft and where they'll play. If I'm correct that's when Poles will look to cherry pick a few more vets to fill starting roles or to compete for them. He's not done yet but we have to wait for the market to become flush with vet prospects again.

He's not the ideal "fit" for what Flus wants in a 4-3 DE. Neither is Anderson which is another reason I think they were ok trading past #4, which was the last spot you had a realistic shot at him.
YN would be a situational pass rusher only (2nd and long, 3rd and long, etc.) and just a short-term rental. He'd be an upgrade though cuz, uhhhhhhh, we don't have jacksquat at the position right now. Our pass rush consists mostly of safety blitzes by Brisker.

Agree
I can't see them keeping both Whitehair and Patrick in September. If you're gonna go the vet route at starting C, then you probably want a 1st/2nd year player as the backup while you develop him to take over next season.
It's interesting how Poles' rep differs depending on where you look.
Here the response has been mostly positive to his moves this offseason. On WCG, not so much. There's a lot of disappointment and even anger over there on Poles' failure thus far to "build the trenches".
Yeah every board has curmudgeons who just love to complain, but I have some sympathy for their position. I'm surprised as well we have signed 3 ILBs but only 1 OL (an interior OL to boot). On the DL, we have signed 2 but both are definitely lower-tier, non-sexy signings.
Poles' choices this FA have been.....interesting and unconventional. Let's just put it that way.
He has 4 picks in the top-64 (essentially the top 2 rounds in most drafts). He could get a 5th with a trade-down from #9. Regardless, I really want to see 3+ of those top picks go to OL/DL at this point.

It just seems too early for people to get so worked up about this - good or bad... positive or negative. I just want to watch what happens and then form an opinion as to what I think of Poles' player moves for 2023 (I'm talking about after seeing 4 or 5 games - regular season games unfold). Why get so worked up now when we really know nothing about the plan other than a few pressors that say nothing really. LOL. But I get it. If we won a super bowl this year there (seriously) would be fans having anxiety attacks over worrying we won't win a 2nd SB due to some perceived mis-move by the Bears. Crazy.

I would just like to see Bears win one more Super Bowl before I’m dead. After that, I’m playing with house money. Mats thinks I’m selfish and greedy — should be satisfied with one in a lifetime.

While I would dearly love to see another Bears SB win, I have one thing I'd like to see happen to the Bears, that is even more important to me. I would like to see the Bears become one of those sports franchises that has sustained winning and is viewed as being special (even if hated by opponents they still grudgingly admit the Bears are a special team).
Sustained winning. Like the old Boston Celtics in their golden years. The Yankees. The Bulls in the Jordan years. The Patriots. That level of great play. The championships come (obviously... and multiple championships) but the focus is not on some 1 SB ring and then fading to nothingness. This is one reason why I do like how Poles is approaching the building of a team that is more than slapping some old veterans together for a 1 year run at a SB.
I hate looking at this as "windows" that are briefly open for a (possible) championship, and then there is a quick return to crap.
My hope is that Poles' model can sustain winning for the long haul. Fields is key here. Build the team around him. Certainly include the defense and not just offense. But without Fields there is no greatness here. Just more futility.
