Adams was the best receiver in the league last year so this deserves its own thread. There's an old saying: If you are staying the same in the NFL you're getting worse.
Is Green Bay worse today than they were yesterday? YES!
But we don't play games in March we play them in September. And in September (barring unforeseen injury) Green Bay will be more well rounded and better than they were last year.
Here are my reasons for liking this trade:
1. True, the best receiver in the league is gone. But Rodgers was WAY too dependent on Adams. They're in the super bowl if he doesn't stare down Adams and throw into coverage rather than hit a wide open Lazard at the end of the niner game. This offense is supposed to be run first and you can't do that when you have to feed the all pro receiver so much. The Packers are 7-0 without Adams and the offense becomes even more unpredictable when he's not on the field. The formula of Rodgers and Adams has been 0-3 the last three years in the playoffs.
2. With the 20 million in cash the Packers can now resign Rasoul Douglass. The trio of DB's we have once that happens will be the best in the league. They also can maybe get back MVS. Or Maybe sign JuJu etc... Put one of those two with a first round pick like Chris Olave and maybe another in the second round and, while you don't have a player like Adams, you have a better overall group of WR"s.
3. The packers now have 5 picks in the top 100. Gute seems to be playing chess on draft day while other GM's are playing checkers. 5 picks in the top 100 could land us upgrades at DT, Safety, ILB, OL, TE or WR. There will be guys from those top five picks that are ready to contribute right away.
4. The cap moving forward: It would have been extremely difficult in 3 years for the Packers to get out of the contracts of both Rodgers and Devonte. This will make the impact from the cap hit way more manageable.
5. Devante is NOT worth quarterback money... He's a product of a quarterback that puts balls in a pin point location that only Adams can catch. Granted Adams is the master at winning these but you have to wonder what his production would have been without having Rodgers on the other end. Add to that the fact that the Raiders are paying quarter back money to a WR who will be over 30 throughout this contract? I Hate paying big money to certain positions over the age of 30. WR is at the top of that list right below running back.
6. They Packers will have a full season of three pro bowlers available this year that they were without last year. Yes, we lost a probowler in Adams but they are gaining 3. Also, FYI we lose an aging pro bowler every year.... Young bucks gotta step up...
GB, I think, will have the ability to field a top five defense this next year. Remember they completely dominated SFO in that playoff game and only lost because of the worst special teams performance anyone has seen in a football game. The special teams should get better with Rich Bissachia. And I think with the two pro bowlers coming back on the offensive line the running game will improve and the offense will be more well rounded and with less holes.
